Kidnapping in Enugu: Eight Travelers Abducted in Udi Area

Enugu State, once known for its peace and calm, is now facing big challenges  over security. On Sunday, June 1, 2025, a disturbing event shook the state: eight travelers were kidnapped by armed men at Obioma community, along the Udi, Oji River road in Udi Local Government Area.

According to reports, the victims were traveling in a commercial bus when the attackers struck. Eyewitnesses said the gunmen, who were armed and masked, blocked the road and forcefully dragged the passengers out of the vehicle. The victims were then taken into the nearby forest, and as of Tuesday morning, their location was still unknown.

This incident has caused fear and panic among residents in the area, many of whom now worry about traveling, especially at night or on less busy roads. The Udi, Oji road is a popular route for both travelers and traders, making it a prime target for criminal groups.

People living in Obioma and surrounding communities are deeply worried. Many say this is not the first time such an event has happened in the area. Locals have called on the Enugu State Government and the Nigeria Police Force to take quick action.

One resident  said:

“We are living in fear. This road is now a danger zone. If the government does not act fast, more people will fall victim”

In recent weeks, the Enugu State Police Command has increased patrols and carried out several operations against kidnappers. In May 2025 alone, police reported rescuing 28 kidnapped victims and arresting 10 suspects during raids across the state. However, the latest kidnapping shows that more work is still needed.

The police have promised to investigate this latest case thoroughly and to do everything possible to bring the victims home safely. Spokespersons have also urged the public to share any helpful information that could lead to the arrest of the criminals.

These are happening  because the Security experts believe several factors contribute to the rise in kidnappings:

Governor Peter Mbah recently announced plans to improve security across Enugu State. Part of the 2025 budget includes money for:

The kidnapping of eight innocent travelers is a tragic reminder that more needs to be done to secure Enugu roads and communities. Security is not just the job of the police or the government it also involves local leaders, youth groups, and the community.

To  solve this problem, Enugu State needs:

Our hearts go out to the victims and their families. We hope they will be rescued soon and that peace will return to Udi and all parts of Enugu.
