The Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) has approved a major reduction in electricity tariffs for Band A customers in the state. Starting August 1, 2025, the cost per kilowatt hour (kWh) will drop from ₦209 to ₦160, following a new tariff order issued to Main Power Electricity Distribution Limited, the company now in charge of electricity supply in Enugu.
This development is part of the state’s push for a more affordable and transparent electricity market, backed by the Enugu State Electricity Law 2023. The law, signed by Governor Peter Mbah,This was contained in the Commission’s Order No. EERC/2025/003 entitled “Tariff Order for MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited 2025, issued by the Commission at the weekend. gives the state full authority to manage power generation, transmission, and distribution independently, in line with the 2023 Constitutional Amendment and the Electricity Act 2023.
According to the EERC Chairman, Chijioke Okonkwo, the tariff review was based on a detailed cost analysis using the commission’s 2024 Tariff Methodology Regulations. The Commission calculated an average cost of ₦94 per kWh, thanks to a federal subsidy of about ₦45, which lowers the actual cost of power generation (₦112) for Enugu consumers.
While Band A customers will now pay ₦160/kWh, tariffs for Bands B, C, D, and E will remain unchanged for now. Mr. Okonkwo explained that the reduced Band A rate is designed to ease the impact of rising costs on consumers, but warned that the tariff may increase if the federal government withdraws the existing subsidy.
“Until that happens, it’s only fair that customers in Band A benefit from this lower rate,” he stated.
To ensure fair billing and service delivery, the Commission has introduced strict monitoring measures for Main Power. The utility company is required to: Publish daily power supply statistics (averaged over seven days) on its website by 9 a.m. each day ,Report to the Commission within 24 hours if it fails to meet service expectations on any Band A feeder for two consecutive days,
Automatically downgrade any Band A feeder to a lower band if power supply falls short for seven straight days.
The EERC emphasized its commitment to protecting consumers, attracting investors, and improving electricity access across Enugu State.
“This is a win for the people of Enugu,” the Commission concluded.
