Enugu Air Aircraft Skids Off Runway at Benin Airport, NSIB Launches Investigation

By Peace Orjiani

An aircraft operated by Enugu Air was involved in a runway excursion at Benin Airport on Thursday after landing, prompting aviation authorities to launch an investigation into the incident.

According to preliminary reports, the aircraft veered or skidded off the runway shortly after touchdown. Emergency response teams at the airport responded immediately, ensuring that all passengers and crew members were safely evacuated from the aircraft.

There have been no reports of fatalities, and no serious injuries have been officially confirmed as of the time of filing this report. Aviation officials described the evacuation as orderly, while airport emergency personnel quickly secured the scene to prevent further risks.

The incident has attracted widespread attention because Enugu Air is one of Nigeria’s newest state-owned airlines and has rapidly expanded its domestic operations since its launch. The airline currently operates several domestic routes and recently added new aircraft to its fleet as part of its expansion program.

Following the incident, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) confirmed that it has opened an investigation in line with international aviation safety standards. Investigators are expected to examine the aircraft, interview the flight crew, retrieve flight data, and determine the factors that led to the runway excursion.

The investigation will also involve collaboration with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the airline to establish whether weather conditions, runway conditions, technical issues, or operational factors contributed to the occurrence.

Aviation experts note that runway excursions, while serious, do not necessarily indicate a crash. Such incidents can occur due to factors including heavy rainfall, reduced braking effectiveness, tyre failure, mechanical faults, or pilot operational decisions. Determining the exact cause requires a thorough technical investigation.

As of publication, Enugu Air has not released a detailed statement explaining the cause of the incident. The airline is expected to cooperate fully with investigators while awaiting the outcome of the NSIB’s findings.

The occurrence comes as Nigeria’s aviation industry continues to strengthen its safety oversight and reporting systems. The NSIB has repeatedly emphasized that every aviation occurrence, regardless of severity, is investigated to improve safety and prevent future incidents.

Passengers scheduled to travel on affected Enugu Air services are advised to monitor official updates from the airline regarding any disruptions or schedule adjustments.

Authorities have assured the public that a preliminary report will be released after investigators complete the initial phase of the inquiry, while a comprehensive final report will be published once all evidence has been reviewed.

Although the incident caused concern among passengers and the aviation community, the successful evacuation of everyone on board highlights the effectiveness of the aircraft crew and airport emergency response procedures.

Further updates will be provided as more official information becomes available.
