A New Chapter Begins for Enugu North

Big changes are happening in Enugu North Local Government Area as Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah officially marked off the first phase of the Urban Renewal Project on Wednesday, June 19, 2025. This major project is part of the governor’s vision to transform Enugu into a modern, clean, and smart city, making life easier and better for all residents.

The event was attended by government officials, traditional leaders, youth groups, and excited residents who came out in large numbers to witness the historic moment.

This first phase of urban renewal is focused on basic infrastructure and public services, especially in areas that have been neglected for years. Here are the key things included:

1. Newly Laid Roads

Before now, many roads in Enugu North were in terrible condition full of potholes, muddy during rainy seasons, and dusty in dry weather. Now, several of those roads have been fully reconstructed and laid  with proper drainage systems. These smooth roads will reduce car damage, cut down travel time, and help business owners and transport workers move around easily.

2. Renovation of the City Hall

The City Hall, a key public building in Enugu North, has been given a complete face lift. This building now provides a comfortable space for:

  • Government meetings

  • Community events

  • Youth and women empowerment programs

  • Educational and health awareness campaigns

  • It is now a symbol of development and unity, welcoming all members of the community.

3. Installation of 1,000 Solar-Powered Street Lights

Perhaps the most exciting part of this renewal is the installation of 1,000 solar powered street lights across all 13 political wards in Enugu North. These lights will:

  • Brighten the streets at night

  • Improve security

  • Help traders and roadside businesses stay open later

  • Reduce accidents caused by darkness

  • Save energy costs using clean, renewable power from the sun

This move also supports the governor’s promise to promote clean and green energy solutions across Enugu State.

The people of Enugu North have warmly welcomed the changes. Many say they didn’t believe the project would happen so fast, but Governor Mbah’s actions are speaking louder than words.

A shop owner near one of the newly repaired roads, said:

“I used to close my shop by 6 p.m. because the roads were dark and rough. But now with good lights and smooth roads, I can sell till 9 or 10 p.m. I’m very happy.”

A commercial tricycle rider added:

“Before, I spent too much money fixing my keke because of bad roads. Now, the road is smooth. No more stress.”

Even young people have praised the governor’s work. A youth leader noted:

“We feel seen and valued. We thank the governor for not forgetting us.”

Governor Mbah has made it clear that urban renewal is a key part of his agenda. His goal is to rebuild Enugu from the ground up creating smart cities, sustainable infrastructure, and better services for every resident.

He said at the event:

“This is just the beginning. We are building a new Enugu that will be safe, beautiful, and full of opportunities. No community will be left behind.”

He also promised that other local governments will soon enjoy similar projects, including:

  • More road rehabilitation

  • Streetlights and solar projects

  • Better waste management

  • Clean water supply

  • Market and school upgrades

Beyond the physical development, this project also brings a change in mindset. Clean streets, bright lights, and working public infrastructure make people proud of their communities. It gives citizens a sense of hope and belonging, and it encourages everyone to take better care of public spaces.

Urban renewal also supports:

  • Job creation (construction workers, technicians, engineers, vendors)

  • Youth engagement (community cleanups and maintenance)Tourism and small business growth

  • Property value appreciation in upgraded neighborhoods

 Conclusion:

The Urban Renewal Project in Enugu North is not just about roads and lights, it's about improving the daily lives of real people. It shows that the government can work when leaders are serious, focused, and ready to serve.

As more areas in Enugu await their turn, the success of this first phase gives hope to many. If this energy continues, Enugu State could become a shining example for the entire country.
