The Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) says it is taking urgent steps to end the sudden electricity shortages affecting parts of the state.
The power cuts began after Main Power Electricity Distribution Company Limited reported that its parent company, the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), reduced the supply of electricity. This followed EERC’s recent decision to lower the Band A tariff from ₦209 to ₦160 per kWh.
In a statement issued on Sunday, EERC said it met with both Main Power and EEDC on Thursday, August 7, 2025, to address the problem.
According to the commission, Main Power explained that technical issues described as “code coverage conflicts and related glitches” made it difficult to separate Enugu State’s power supply from that of other states in EEDC’s network. The company assured that these issues would be resolved soon.
EERC instructed Main Power to officially inform customers about the vending (token purchase) challenges and update them on progress.
On the issue of reduced supply, EERC reminded Main Power that if they disagreed with the tariff reduction, the proper step was to file a formal petition within 30 days, which would allow for a public hearing, instead of cutting power to customers.
The commission said it is engaging stakeholders at both state and federal levels to ensure that service providers, investors, and residents benefit from the growing subnational electricity market in Enugu State.
EERC also stressed that Main Power will be allowed to recover enough revenue to cover its operational costs and earn a fair return on investments, in line with the Enugu State Electricity Law 2023.
