Enugu Government Settles Land Dispute Between Nkanu East and Nkanu West Communities

The Enugu State Government has successfully resolved a long-standing land disagreement between two communities  Isienu Amagunze in Nkanu East and Ndiuno Akpugo in Nkanu West.

The land issue nearly turned violent on December 11, 2024, after farmers from Isienu Amagunze accused Uche Nnaji, Nigeria’s Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, of taking over their farmland under the claim of a federal project. Tensions increased when bulldozers destroyed over six hectares of cassava and yam farms.

Thanks to the quick intervention of the state government, the situation was prevented from turning into a violent clash.

The Enugu State Boundary Committee later investigated the matter and recently released a report. According to the report, the true boundary between both communities is a stream called the Iyi Ezi, which also marks the official boundary between Nkanu East and Nkanu West local government areas.

Reacting to the committee’s decision, Anthony Mbah, the representative for Nkanu East in the State House of Assembly, said the decision matches what the Isienu Amagunze people had believed all along. He thanked the government for stepping in on time.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the State Traditional Rulers Council, Igwe Ikechukwu Asadu, praised the government’s efforts, saying it has shown a strong commitment to peace and community harmony.

Commissioner for Chieftaincy and Rural Development, Okey Ogbodo, also appreciated the peaceful outcome and asked both communities to respect the boundary ruling.

The traditional ruler of Isienu Amagunze, Emmanuel Nnamani, thanked Governor Peter Mbah for his leadership and for helping to restore peace.

This peaceful resolution shows that the Enugu State Government is serious about solving conflicts and maintaining peace among its people.
