Enugu Set to Host 2026 National Sports Festival Chief Nnaji Outlines Benefits

Enugu State is set to host the 23rd National Sports Festival, also known as the 2026 Coal City Games, and many stakeholders believe this will bring major benefits to the state. One of those stakeholders is Chief Jonathan Nnaji, Vice President of the Africa Taekwondo Union and an executive member of the Nigeria Olympic Committee. He is also a member of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the festival.

Speaking shortly after the inauguration of the LOC, Chief Nnaji expressed his excitement and confidence in the state’s readiness to host a successful national event. He praised Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah for his commitment to sports and youth development, describing him as a governor who truly understands the importance of investing in sports to grow the economy and unite the people.

“ He said this will be only the second time a South East state is hosting the National Sports Festival. It’s a big deal for us in Enugu, and I’m personally proud that our state has been given this opportunity. I know we can make it a huge success,” Nnaji said.

According to him, the upcoming sports festival will bring multiple long term benefits to Enugu State. He outlined several positive impacts, such as:

  • Boosting the state’s economy through increased commercial activity

  • Increasing internal revenue for the state government

  • Promoting tourism and hospitality by attracting visitors from across Nigeria

  • Upgrading sports infrastructure like stadiums and training facilities

  • Encouraging the discovery of local sports talents

  • Creating job opportunities for young people

  • Promoting unity and national integration through peaceful sports competition

Chief Nnaji also highlighted Governor Mbah’s ambitious plans to grow Enugu’s economy from ₦4 billion to $30 billion in revenue. He said events like the National Sports Festival are the kind of activities that can help bring in the investment, attention, and collaboration needed to meet that goal.

“The governor has a bold vision for Enugu State. By hosting this festival, we are putting Enugu on the map not just as a cultural center, but also as a hub for sports, tourism, and international events. People will begin to see that Enugu is ready for bigger things,” he said.

He assured residents and Nigerians at large that Enugu has the time and capacity to get ready for the event. With one full year to prepare, Chief Nnaji believes the state can achieve all its goals with proper planning and hard work.

“One year is enough if we are serious and committed. We must go the extra mile to ensure everything is ready. We have a strong team and a capable governor. With this kind of leadership, I believe the sky is not our limit heaven is,” he said confidently.

Chief Nnaji also commended the Enugu State Commissioner for Youth and Sports for being active, open to new ideas, and willing to work with professionals to make the event a success.

“Our Commissioner is a young, vibrant man who listens. That gives me hope. Together, we’ll select our best athletes, train them well, and aim to not just host the games, but also to win many medals,” he added.

He called on all stakeholders, including sports officials, athletes, private businesses, and the general public to support the preparations in any way they can.

“This is more than a sporting event, it's an opportunity for Enugu to shine. Let’s all come together and make history,” he concluded.

In summary, the 2026 Coal City Games in Enugu will not only be about sports but also about growth, unity, and progress for the state. With strong leadership, solid planning, and community support, the festival is set to leave a lasting legacy in Enugu State.
