Enugu Youths Support New Security Bill to Keep Communities Safe

Young people in Enugu State are showing strong support for a new law that is being discussed in the Enugu State House of Assembly

The Enugu State chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has honored  Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah for introducing the “Maintenance of Internal Security, Vigilance and Order” Bill to the Enugu State House of Assembly.

. This new law, called a Security Bill, is made to help protect lives and property in the state. It includes ideas like community policing, which means allowing local people to help in keeping their communities safe. The bill also includes ways to make sure that security officers do their jobs properly.

Youth groups and traditional leaders are happy about this bill. They believe it will help reduce crime and improve safety for everyone.

The new security bill is meant to fight problems like:

  • Kidnapping

  • Armed robbery

  • Attacks by herdsmen

  • General insecurity in villages and towns

Here are some of the things the bill plans to do:

  •  Allow local people to be trained and work with the police in protecting their areas.

  •  Set up village security teams with youths, elders, women, and traditional rulers.

  •  Make it easier to report crimes quickly.

  •  Make sure security officers are held responsible if they don’t do their jobs well.

  •  Publish yearly reports so the public can see what is working.

This bill will help bring the people and the government together to solve security problems

Youths Are Ready to Help

Across the state, young people are supporting this bill because they want to be part of the solution. Many say that they know their communities well and can help catch criminals faster.

“We know our areas better than anyone. If the government lets us help, we can stop many crimes before they happen,” said a youth leader in Nsukka.

Young people are also asking the government to give them training and jobs through this new security plan. They believe this will reduce crime and make young people more responsible.

“If youths are busy with work and helping their communities, they won’t have time to cause trouble,” said by a student in Enugu.

Traditional rulers in Enugu State are also happy about the new bill. They say that they’ve seen many problems caused by insecurity, especially in villages.

“We know who lives in our villages. We can tell when strangers enter. If the government works with us, things will get better,” said Chief Igwe Lawrence Eze from Isi Uzo.

They believe the bill will help bring peace if the government provides training and support

Many youth groups and civil society organizations want the House of Assembly to organize public meetings before passing the bill. They want everyone to have the chance to speak and share their ideas.

“This law will affect everyone, so we should all have a say,” said a youth group from Oji River.

Enugu State has seen many sad events in recent months. In places like Eha Amufu, farmers have been attacked, and people are afraid to go to their farms.

This security bill gives hope. If done well, it will bring peace and allow people to live without fear again.

If the bill is passed, the government needs to:

  • Train local people to join the security teams

  • Build offices or community centers where they can work from

  • Create phone numbers or apps for people to report crimes

  • Visit communities regularly for updates

  • Give proper funding to the teams and avoid corruption

 Conclusion

This security bill could be a big step forward for Enugu State. Young people and traditional leaders are ready to work together. This shows that the people of Enugu want peace and are willing to help make it happen.

“We’re not just watching anymore. We want to protect our homes,” said the Enugu Youth Movement. If you live in Enugu and care about your safety, this is the time to speak up and support this new bill. Let the government know that you want a safer and stronger Enugu State.

Together, we can build a better future.
