On June 3, 2025, the community of Emene in Enugu State experienced a devastating flood following heavy rainfall. The downpour led to the overflow of drainage systems, submerging homes, displacing families, and disrupting daily life. This incident has highlighted the urgent need for effective flood management and proactive measures to prevent future occurrences.

The Flood Event

At about 1pm yesterday, due to the heavy rainfall that occurred the  residents of Emene found their streets and homes flooded with water. The floodwaters damaged properties, rendered roads impassable, and forced many to seek shelter elsewhere. Local businesses were also affected, leading to economic losses for shop owners and traders.

Community Reactions

The residents of Emene expressed frustration over the recurring flooding issues. Many took to social media to share images and videos of the flood's aftermath, calling for immediate government intervention. Some residents blamed the blockage of drainage systems due to improper waste disposal, while others criticized the lack of infrastructure maintenance.

A local resident of emene stated that "Every year, we face the same problem. The government needs to take this seriously and find a lasting solution."

Challenges in Flood Management

Despite receiving over N660 million from the Federal Government between January and June 2024 for ecological projects, Enugu State allocated just over N99 million to environmental protection during that period. This underutilization of funds has raised concerns about the state's commitment to addressing environmental issues. Source (fij.ng)

Experts have also pointed out that poor urban planning, inadequate drainage systems, and deforestation contribute significantly to the increasing frequency and severity of floods in Nigeria.

The Way Forward

To mitigate future flooding in Emene and other parts of Enugu State, the following measures are recommended:

  1. Infrastructure Development: Invest in the construction and maintenance of proper drainage systems to ensure efficient water flow during heavy rains.

  2. Public Awareness Campaigns: Educate residents on the importance of proper waste disposal and the dangers of blocking drainage channels.

  3. Strict Enforcement of Building Regulations: Prevent construction on floodplains and ensure adherence to urban planning guidelines.

  4. Utilization of Allocated Funds: Ensure that funds designated for ecological and environmental projects are fully utilized for their intended purposes.

  5. Community Engagement: Involve local communities in decision making processes related to flood management to foster a sense of ownership and responsibility. Source (dailytrust.com)

Conclusion

The flood in Emene shows how poor planning and flood control can lead to serious problems. It’s important for the government, local leaders, and residents to work together and take action to stop this from happening again. If they act now, Enugu State can protect its people and communities from the damage floods can cause.
