Gov. Mbah Suspends Enugu Traditional Ruler Over Community Crisis

By Isaac Mission

The Enugu State Government has suspended the traditional ruler of Obeagu Ugwuaji Autonomous Community in Enugu South Local Government Area, Igwe Christopher Nyia, following a communal crisis in the area.

The suspension was announced by the Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs, Charles Egumgbe, who said the decision was taken in the interest of restoring peace, maintaining public order and ensuring good governance within the community.

According to the state government, the action followed allegations of gross misconduct levelled against the monarch by members of the community. The suspension letter was reportedly delivered to the traditional ruler on July 28 in line with the directive of Governor Peter Mbah.

To determine the circumstances surrounding the crisis, the government has established an administrative panel of inquiry. The panel has been tasked with investigating the immediate and underlying causes of the conflict that resulted in the breakdown of law and order in Obeagu Ugwuaji.

The inquiry will also examine the role played by the suspended traditional ruler and any other individuals connected to the disturbances. In addition, the panel is expected to identify those responsible for actions that contributed to the crisis and make appropriate recommendations.

The government has given the panel two weeks to conclude its investigation and submit its report.

The latest suspension comes weeks after the Ministry of Chieftaincy Affairs suspended three traditional rulers and four president-generals from communities in Ezeagu Local Government Area over alleged misconduct linked to security-related issues.

State authorities said the measures reflect the government's commitment to promoting peace, accountability and stability across communities in Enugu State.
