Governor Mbah Revives Nigergas After 30 Years of Inactivity

Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, has officially reopened Nigergas Company Limited, which had been dormant for more than three decades.

Speaking at the unveiling, Mbah said the revived company has already created jobs for over 100 skilled and semi-skilled workers and is expected to generate more than 5,000 indirect jobs in areas such as distribution, transport, fabrication, and supply chain services.

Nigergas, originally established in 1962 during the leadership of Dr. Michael Okpara, was once a symbol of Eastern Nigeria’s industrial growth. Governor Mbah said its revival reflects his administration’s determination to restore state owned industries and grow Enugu’s economy from $4.4 billion to $30 billion.

“What we have brought back to life today is not just a facility of pipes and machines. It is the return of purpose, dignity, and productivity to a company that once represented the industrial promise of Eastern Nigeria,” Mbah stated.

He emphasized that his economic growth plan is not a political slogan but a practical vision to transform Enugu into a diversified and self-reliant economy.

On the rehabilitation model, Mbah explained that the state approved a full upgrade of the company and adopted a management system that combines public ownership with private-sector efficiency.

“The idea was to keep Nigergas under public ownership while ensuring it operates in a modern, transparent, and commercially viable way,” he said.

The governor added that Nigergas now has modern equipment and the capacity to meet urgent demands in both healthcare and industry.
