Governor Mbah Vows to Immortalize Football Icon, Christian Chukwu

Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has pledged to immortalize the late Nigerian football legend, Christian “Chairman” Chukwu, describing him as a national treasure whose life and career continue to inspire generations.

Speaking at a Night of Tributes in Chukwu’s honor at the Enugu International Conference Centre, Governor Mbah announced that the state government will retire the iconic Number 5 jersey, which the late defender wore throughout his Rangers International FC career.

The governor further disclosed plans to provide a welfare package for 109 former Rangers players, adding that his administration would collaborate with the Federal Government to ensure Chukwu’s name and achievements remain celebrated.

“Chairman Chukwu was more than a defender or captain; he was a unifying beacon at a time when our nation sought pride and inspiration,” Mbah said.
“He was a proud son of Enugu, an icon of Igboland, and a symbol of leadership through sacrifice, discipline, and humility. His legacy will live on not only in Enugu but in the hearts of football lovers around the world.”

Chukwu’s daughter, Barr. Adaora Ndibe, described him as a loving husband and father, while his sister, Stella Onwe, called him the pillar of the family.

Former Green Eagles goalkeeper Emmanuel Okala praised Chukwu’s exceptional leadership, discipline, and humility. Other dignitaries who paid tributes included former Minister of Sports Jim Nwobodo (represented), former Inspector General of Police Ogbonnaya Onovo, Rangers International FC officials, government representatives, and several past and present footballers.

Chukwu, who died on April 12, 2025, at the age of 74, was laid to rest in his hometown of Obe, Nkanu West LGA, following a week long program of tributes that included:

  •  A Service of Songs at St. Andrew’s Basilica, Enugu.

  • A colloquium at Enugu Sports Club.

  • A novelty match at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium.

  • A funeral mass at St. Philip’s Anglican Church, Obe, before interment.

Widely regarded as one of Africa’s greatest defenders, Chukwu captained Enugu Rangers and the Nigerian national team (Green Eagles), leading them to historic victories. His leadership, humility, and commitment to the game, Governor Mbah noted, will “illuminate the paths of future generations.
