Jim Nwobodo: Why His Legacy Must Be Protected Amid Enugu Property Dispute

By Isaac Mission

Former Anambra State Governor, former Minister of Sports and ex-Senator representing Enugu East, Jim Ifeanyichukwu Nwobodo, has been drawn into a property dispute in Enugu that has reportedly left the elder statesman deeply concerned about the possible impact on his reputation.

Nwobodo, who celebrated his 86th birthday in May 2026, has had a long and influential career spanning business, politics and sports.

His tenure as chairman of Rangers International of Enugu was associated with one of the club’s most successful periods, including its triumph in the 1977 African Cup Winners’ Cup.

As Minister of Sports, he was also in office when Nigeria recorded an historic performance at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, winning football gold and other medals, including Chioma Ajunwa’s gold in the long jump.

Politically, Nwobodo served as governor of the old Anambra State from 1979 to 1983. His administration covered the territory that later became Enugu, Anambra and Ebonyi states.

The latest controversy centres on a parcel of land within an estate at Independence Layout, Enugu, reportedly owned by the former governor.

The dispute involves businessman Basil Ogbuanu, who is said to have accused Nwobodo of demolishing a property he was developing on land allegedly purchased from the former governor.

Ogbuanu reportedly maintains that he possesses documents supporting his ownership and right to develop the property. The matter is already before the courts.

The dispute reportedly escalated further in June when Ogbuanu wrote to the Nigerian Bar Association, alleging professional misconduct against Nwobodo’s wife, Patricia, a senior lawyer.

Nwobodo has denied responsibility for the demolition and offered his own account of the disagreement.

According to the former governor, he acquired the land in 1976 for a proposed hotel project but later abandoned the plan after entering politics. He said purchasers within the estate were expected to wait for the regularisation of the relevant documentation before proceeding with development.

He further alleged that Ogbuanu began construction without waiting for the process to be completed and that the development did not conform to the original plan for the estate.

Nwobodo also claimed that the construction of student hostel facilities generated complaints from other property owners who allegedly threatened to leave the estate. He said a stop order was subsequently issued by the Enugu State authorities, but alleged that construction continued.

The former governor expressed disappointment over the controversy, particularly the allegations involving his wife, whom he said had previously encouraged him to give Ogbuanu an opportunity despite earlier warnings.

Nwobodo has faced major political and business challenges throughout his career, including his well-known political fallout with former Enugu State Governor Chimaroke Nnamani and the loss of one of his major business investments, Savannah Bank.

However, the current dispute appears to have affected him differently, particularly because of the potential implications for the reputation he has built over decades.

The controversy has also raised questions about the broader circumstances surrounding the estate and why the dispute appears to centre on one particular property owner.

With the matter already before the courts, the final determination of the competing claims will ultimately depend on the relevant evidence and judicial process.

For an elder statesman with decades of public service behind him, however, the dispute has renewed conversations about protecting the reputation and legacy of individuals who have played significant roles in the history of Enugu, Anambra and Nigeria.

The central question now is whether the disagreement can be resolved through the appropriate legal channels without further damage to the reputation of the parties involved.
