Kano Fire Outbreak: Access Bank Branch and House Affected as Firefighters Respond

Kano Residents Concerned as Two Fire Outbreaks Hit Different Areas

Kano State recorded two separate fire outbreaks on Monday, August 10, 2026, causing concern among residents and putting firefighters on alert. One of the fires affected an Access Bank branch in Dawanau, in Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area, while the second fire occurred in a residential building in Sabuwar Gandu, Sheka Gari, in Kumbotso Local Government Area. The two incidents happened several hours apart. According to information released by the Kano State Fire Service, the first incident was reported at about 1:17 pm, while the second fire was reported at about 6:19 pm. Thankfully, firefighters were able to bring both fires under control and prevent them from spreading further. However, the incidents have once again drawn attention to the importance of fire prevention and quick emergency response in communities across Nigeria.

Fire Breaks Out at Access Bank in Dawanau

The first incident happened at an Access Bank branch located in Dawanau, Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area of Kano State. The Kano State Fire Service said it received a distress call from a resident identified as Michael at about 1:17 pm. Following the emergency call, firefighters from the Dawanau Fire Station immediately moved to the location. When the firefighters arrived, they found a one-storey building, measuring approximately 100 by 80 feet, being used as a bank and affected by the fire. One of the major items affected by the fire was a Mikano generator, which was reportedly completely engulfed by flames. An electrical transformer in the area was also slightly affected. The firefighters worked quickly to control the situation and stop the fire from spreading to other sections of the bank building. According to the Kano State Fire Service, the fire was successfully contained. The cause of the incident, however, had not been established at the time of the report and remained under investigation. The successful response was important because a fire at a commercial banking facility could potentially cause significant damage if it spreads to other parts of the building or nearby properties. Banks and other businesses often contain generators, electrical equipment, fuel and other materials that can increase the seriousness of a fire incident. This makes proper electrical maintenance, fire extinguishers and emergency response plans very important.

Second Fire Hits Residential Building in Kumbotso

While firefighters were dealing with the first incident, another fire was reported several hours later in Kumbotso Local Government Area. The second incident occurred at Sabuwar Gandu, Sheka Gari, at approximately 6:19 pm. A distress call was received from a person identified as Ahmad Mainama. Firefighters from the Sharada Industrial Area Fire Station were then dispatched to the location. Upon arrival, the firefighters discovered that a ground-floor residential building measuring approximately 40 by 30 feet was on fire. The fire affected several parts of the home, including two bedrooms, a parlour and a kitchen. Firefighters used one jet from the Sharada Fire Truck, with additional support from two jets provided by nearby factories. Through the combined efforts of the firefighters and the nearby factories, the fire was eventually brought under control. The cause of this second fire was also not immediately known and remained under investigation.

No Link Between the Two Fires Reported

Although the two fires happened in Kano on the same day, there is no indication from the Kano State Fire Service that the incidents were connected. The first fire occurred at a bank in Dawanau, Dawakin Tofa, in the afternoon. The second happened later in the evening at a residential property in Kumbotso. Authorities are investigating the causes of both incidents. It is therefore important for members of the public to avoid spreading unconfirmed information about what may have caused the fires. Fire incidents can sometimes be linked to electrical faults, generators, cooking equipment, fuel or other sources. However, until investigators establish the actual cause, it is better to rely on official information.

Kano Fire Service Advises Residents to Be Careful

Following the two incidents, the Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, urged residents to remain vigilant and take practical steps to reduce the risk of fire outbreaks. He particularly advised households to have functional fire extinguishers and observe basic fire-safety measures. This advice is important because many household fires can become worse when people do not have the necessary equipment or knowledge to respond quickly. Residents should ensure that electrical appliances are properly maintained and should avoid overloading electrical sockets. Generators should also be placed in safe, properly ventilated areas away from combustible materials. Cooking areas should equally be handled with care. Gas cylinders, cooking stoves and other sources of heat should be properly maintained and kept away from materials that can easily catch fire.

Quick Response Can Save Lives and Property

One major lesson from the Kano incidents is the importance of reporting fires as quickly as possible. In both cases, emergency calls helped the fire service respond to the affected locations. A quick response can make the difference between a small fire being controlled and a major disaster involving several buildings. The Kano State Fire Service also urged residents to report fire incidents promptly so that firefighters can arrive as quickly as possible.  Communities can also play an important role by keeping emergency access routes clear and assisting firefighters when necessary, provided that residents do not put themselves in danger.

Fire Safety Should Be Everyone's Responsibility

Fire prevention should not be left only to government agencies. Individuals, businesses, landlords, schools, markets and community organisations all have roles to play. Homes and businesses should have working fire extinguishers where appropriate. Electrical installations should be checked regularly, and damaged wires should be repaired or replaced. People should also know the emergency numbers and understand what to do when a fire starts. Most importantly, people should avoid attempting to fight a large or rapidly spreading fire themselves. Once a fire becomes dangerous, the safest action is to move away from the area and contact the appropriate emergency service.

Conclusion

The two fire outbreaks recorded in Kano State on Monday have raised fresh concerns about fire safety in homes and businesses. The first incident affected an Access Bank branch in Dawanau, Dawakin Tofa, where a generator was completely engulfed and an electrical transformer was slightly affected. Firefighters successfully stopped the flames from spreading to other sections of the bank. The second incident occurred several hours later in Sabuwar Gandu, Sheka Gari, Kumbotso, where a residential building was affected. Two bedrooms, a parlour and a kitchen were damaged before firefighters brought the situation under control. The causes of both fires are still being investigated, and there is no official indication that the two incidents were connected. The incidents serve as a reminder that fire prevention requires constant attention. Functional fire extinguishers, safe electrical practices, careful use of generators and cooking equipment, and quick reporting of emergencies can help reduce the loss of lives and property.

For Kano residents and Nigerians generally, the message from the fire service is clear: staying alert and taking fire-safety precautions can prevent a small emergency from becoming a major disaster.
