The Enugu State chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed confidence in its chances ahead of the September 26 local government elections, announcing that all its candidates have successfully passed the screening exercise conducted by the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC).
Speaking to journalists in Enugu on Monday, the party's state chairman, Dr. Johnpaul Anih, revealed that the NDC has nominated more than 14 chairmanship candidates and over 210 councillorship candidates to contest positions across the state's local government areas.
According to him, the party has already commenced active campaigns and grassroots mobilization, describing the upcoming council elections as a critical political exercise that could provide an indication of voter sentiment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Anih praised ENSIEC for ensuring transparency, fairness and inclusiveness during the screening process, noting that the commission's conduct has inspired confidence among political stakeholders.
He, however, cautioned against any attempt to undermine the integrity of the electoral process, stressing that the party would pursue all lawful and democratic avenues to challenge any form of manipulation.
"The level of professionalism displayed by ENSIEC during the screening exercise is commendable. The commission has created a fair environment for all participating parties, and we expect this standard to be maintained throughout the election period," he said.
The NDC chairman further maintained that the party's candidates emerged through a transparent primary election process that was monitored by electoral officials and security agencies.
He described the candidates as competent individuals with the experience, integrity and grassroots support needed to provide effective leadership at the local government level.
"Our candidates were selected through a credible process that reflected the will of party members. We are confident they have what it takes to deliver quality governance and development to their communities," Anih stated.
He added that the party expects a strong showing at the polls if the elections are conducted in a free, fair and credible manner.
Also speaking, the party's State Secretary, Dr. Sebastine Chukwuebuka Okafor, expressed optimism about the NDC's prospects in the elections, emphasizing that the party's candidates have established records of service and community engagement.
According to him, their emergence has generated enthusiasm among voters and strengthened public belief in the availability of credible political alternatives.
Okafor observed that many residents of Enugu State are seeking a new style of leadership rooted in accountability, effective representation and people-focused governance.
He also applauded ENSIEC for creating an atmosphere that encourages healthy political competition and urged the commission to sustain its commitment to fairness throughout the electoral process.
The NDC secretary called on citizens across the state to support the party's agenda for grassroots development and transformation.
He said the party remains dedicated to addressing challenges associated with poor representation and ineffective local governance through leaders committed to transparency, development and service to the people.
