NSIB Launches Investigation After Enugu Air Aircraft Runs Off Runway

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has commenced an investigation into the runway excursion involving an Enugu Air aircraft at the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport in Ibadan.

According to the bureau, the incident occurred at about 3:10 p.m. on Thursday, July 23, 2026, while the aircraft was carrying 63 passengers and five crew members.

The NSIB confirmed that everyone on board was safely accounted for and that no injuries or fatalities were recorded.

In a statement issued by the Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Mrs. Funke Adebayo-Arowojobe, the bureau disclosed that its emergency investigation team was deployed to the scene within minutes of receiving the report.

The team has begun collecting and preserving evidence, inspecting the aircraft and runway, interviewing the flight crew and other relevant personnel, and reviewing operational and technical records to determine the cause of the incident.

The bureau also confirmed that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and other relevant airport agencies have been informed, while the aircraft has been secured for investigation.

Speaking on the development, the Director General of the NSIB, Capt. Alex Badeh Jr., expressed relief that the incident did not result in any casualties.

He stressed that although everyone on board escaped unharmed, every runway excursion is treated as a serious aviation occurrence requiring a comprehensive and independent investigation. He also urged the public to avoid speculation while investigators carry out their work in line with international best practices.

The NSIB said a preliminary report is expected within 30 days, while a final report containing its findings and safety recommendations will be released after the investigation is concluded.

The incident briefly affected flight operations at the airport as emergency responders secured the area and aviation authorities carried out initial assessments.

Meanwhile, Enugu Air acknowledged that the occurrence could lead to temporary changes in some flight schedules. The airline assured passengers that anyone affected would be contacted directly and provided with the necessary support.
