The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has denied reports by the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) that an explosion at a substation caused the recent blackout in parts of Enugu and Anambra states.

In a statement on Thursday, TCN spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, clarified that there was no explosion at its Onitsha sub region station.

According to TCN, the outage that occurred on August 21, 2025, around 2:34 a.m. was caused by an insulation flashover on a porcelain insulator of the Red Phase Jumper conductor to Busbar 1. The incident was triggered by rainfall.

Power supply, the company said, was fully restored by 5:54 p.m. on the same day.

TCN also announced that it has scheduled a planned outage for August 31 and September 1, 2025, to replace the faulty porcelain insulators.

“There was no explosion or damage to equipment in the Onitsha transmission region. We urge EEDC to always provide accurate information to the public, as misinformation is unprofessional and unacceptable,” the statement added.
