A Federal High Court sitting in Enugu has sentenced a 24-year-old man, Iziga Jude Ikechukwu, popularly known as “Easy Money,” to one year imprisonment for abusing the Nigerian currency during his birthday celebration.
The judgment was delivered by Justice F. O. Giwa-Ogunbanjo at the court located in Independence Layout, Enugu.
According to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ikechukwu was prosecuted after a viral video surfaced online showing him spraying, stepping on, and mishandling naira notes while celebrating his birthday in a hotel room.
The EFCC revealed that the suspect was arrested on February 28, 2026, in Enugu-Ezike following intelligence gathered from the video, where he was seen recording himself abusing the currency.
He was subsequently arraigned on March 26, 2026, on a one-count charge of mutilating naira notes totaling ₦81,700, an offense that violates Section 21(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007.
During the court proceedings, Ikechukwu pleaded guilty to the charge.
Justice Giwa-Ogunbanjo thereafter sentenced him to one year imprisonment, with an option of a ₦300,000 fine. The court also ordered that the ₦81,700 recovered from him be forfeited to the federal government.
The EFCC reiterated that abusing the naira, whether by spraying, stepping on, or defacing it, remains a criminal offense under Nigerian law, warning the public to desist from such acts.
