Enugu Teaching Hospital Achieves Breakthrough in Complex Brain Surgeries

Enugu, August 20, 2025 Neurosurgeons at Godfrey Okoye University Teaching Hospital, Enugu State, have successfully carried out two complex brain surgeries, with both patients making impressive recoveries within days.

The Vice Chancellor of Godfrey Okoye University, Prof. Christian Anieke, announced the development during a meeting with academic staff and senior officials of the institution.

According to him, in the first case, doctors removed a blood clot from the brain of an elderly patient, which restored the patient’s health and mobility. In the second case, the surgical team performed a decompressed craniotomy on a stroke patient suffering from severe brain swelling, a procedure that helped prevent further damage and aid recovery.

Prof. Anieke praised the teamwork of the neurosurgeons, anesthetists, and support staff, describing the achievement as proof of the hospital’s dedication to providing world class healthcare in Enugu and beyond.

He further revealed that the university’s School of Nursing students will begin their academic activities at the institution’s main campus in October.

On research and innovation, the Vice Chancellor disclosed that the university had received foreign grants for various research projects, noting that such support is a recognition of its growing contribution to global education and healthcare.

The Provost of the College of Medicine, Prof. Frank Akpuaka, also commended the university’s leadership for employing highly qualified medical professionals. He added that the university had recently acquired a Computerized Tomography (CT) machine worth over ₦1 billion and constructed a new building for medical staff and academic use.

Prof. Akpuaka emphasized that these investments would significantly strengthen the university’s expansion program and improve medical training and services.
