Enugu, August 20, 2025 Main Power Electricity Distribution Company has filed a petition against the Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) over its new electricity tariff order.
The EERC had directed Main Power to reduce the electricity tariff for Band A customers from ₦209 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) to ₦160/kWh, effective from August 1, 2025.
However, Main Power, which took over from the former Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), insists that it never reached an agreement with the commission on the new rates.
In a petition dated August 14, 2025, signed by the company’s Managing Director, Ernest Mupwaya, Main Power argued that the tariff reduction order violated the EERC’s own 2024 Tariff Regulation Guidelines, which require a formal hearing when both parties cannot reach an agreement within 21 days.
The company said it had attended meetings with EERC between July 2 and July 4, 2025, but key issues were not resolved. Despite this, the commission went ahead and published the new tariff order on July 18, 2025, without addressing Main Power’s concerns.
Main Power further explained that the reduction could cause serious financial losses, estimating a monthly shortfall of ₦1.3 to ₦1.5 billion and a total deficit of nearly ₦7 billion over five months.
The company has therefore urged the EERC to reverse the new tariff order, warning that its implementation could threaten its operations and affect its contractual obligations with the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc (NBET).
