The Ebonyi State Police Command has arrested two individuals, including a man identified as Justice Ozobi, over allegations that the Commissioner of Police collected ₦700,000 from each of six families to secure the release of their sons.
According to the command, the allegations were false and misleading, prompting the arrest of the persons allegedly behind their circulation.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday and made available to journalists in Abakaliki.
The police said one of the suspects allegedly used a photograph of a former Commissioner of Police in Ebonyi State while making the claims. The command said the use of the retired officer’s image exposed him to unnecessary public embarrassment and ridicule.
Ozobi was reportedly arrested in Anambra State and subsequently transferred to the Ebonyi State Police Command, where he and his accomplice are being investigated.
The command said additional information would be released as the investigation progresses.
While acknowledging the public’s right to express opinions and raise concerns about policing, the police warned against the deliberate spread of information it described as false, malicious or defamatory.
The command stressed that genuine complaints against police officers should be reported through the appropriate channels to allow for proper investigation.
It also reaffirmed its commitment to accountability, professionalism and ethical conduct among its personnel.
The police further advised members of the public to verify information before sharing it, particularly where such claims could damage the reputation of individuals or security institutions.
