Fuel Tanker Falls And Blocks Anambra Road After Steering Failure

A fuel tanker accident occurred at the popular Upper Iweka junction along the busy Onitsha Owerri road in Anambra State, causing significant traffic gridlock and disruption for commuters. According to reports, the loaded tanker veered off its course and fell sideways after suffering a sudden steering failure. The mechanical failure was reportedly triggered when the vehicle ran into a severely bad portion of the road, a problem that has plagued several sections of commercial routes in the area.

The incident instantly drew attention from local residents, passersby, and traffic control officials due to the high risks associated with fallen fuel tankers. Because the vehicle was carrying petroleum products, safety concerns immediately took priority. Community members and emergency responders quickly moved to secure the area, warning motorists and pedestrians to maintain a safe distance to prevent any potential fire outbreaks or secondary accidents. The spilling of fuel or leakage in such a densely populated commercial hub poses severe environmental and safety hazards, prompting urgent action from safety management agencies.

The blockade caused a massive buildup of vehicles, leaving commuters, commercial bus drivers, and private car owners stranded for hours as movement along the major corridor came to a virtual standstill. Traffic management personnel rushed to the scene to divert vehicles through alternative routes and manage the heavy flow of commercial transport typical of the Upper Iweka area. Heavy-duty towing equipment was later mobilized to clear the obstructed path and remove the fallen truck from the middle of the road.

This incident has once again drawn public anger and criticism toward the deteriorating state of infrastructure across various Nigerian highways. Road users and transport unions frequently complain that neglected potholes and poorly maintained federal roads endanger lives daily. Motorists plying the Onitsha Owerri route are appealing to both state and federal authorities to expedite road rehabilitation projects to prevent similar mishaps, safeguard lives, and ensure free-flowing economic activities across the region.
