Gunmen Allegedly Attack Church in Affa, Abduct Worshippers

By Peace Orjiani

Fresh concerns have been raised over the security situation in parts of Enugu State following reports of attacks and kidnappings in communities within Udi and Nsukka Local Government Areas.

The latest incident reportedly occurred on Sunday morning in Affa, Udi Local Government Area, where suspected gunmen allegedly invaded a church during a service and abducted some worshippers.

According to information circulating online, the armed men entered the church while members were gathered for Sunday worship. The incident reportedly caused fear and confusion among the congregation as the attackers took some people away.

One of the victims, who was said to be a catechist in the church, later narrated his experience and explained how the attack happened.

The catechist reportedly said that the worshippers were gathered inside the church for Sunday service when the gunmen suddenly attacked. According to his account, the attackers took a seminarian and other church members away.

He explained that one of the suspected kidnappers instructed him to return while the other victims were taken into the surrounding bush.

Independent reports have also indicated that three people were abducted during the church attack. However, details concerning the exact number of people taken and their identities were still unclear at the time of filing this report. (Premium Times Nigeria)

The incident has generated concern among residents, especially because churches are traditionally regarded as places where people should be able to worship freely and safely.

Earlier Reports of Violence in Opi

The church attack came after reports of another alleged violent incident in Amaukpa village, Opi, in Nsukka Local Government Area.

According to reports shared by a resident and social media user, suspected attackers allegedly went to the community on Friday evening, killed two people and took about five others away.

The report has not yet been independently confirmed by security authorities, and the identities of the alleged victims were not immediately available.

The social media user said the information was shared mainly to alert people travelling or living within the affected areas so they could become more careful.

However, the post reportedly attracted criticism from some members of the public.

While some people questioned the way the information was presented, others allegedly accused the writer of sharing the report for political reasons and claimed that such information could create the impression that the Enugu State Government was not doing enough to address insecurity.

The source rejected the accusations and maintained that there was no hidden political agenda behind the post.

According to the statement, the information was shared because human lives and public safety should come before politics, personal interests or public image.

Source said:

“Humanity must come first before politics or personal interest.”

The statement also acknowledged efforts by the government and security agencies but appealed for more action to protect communities and road users.

Residents Call for Improved Security

The reported incidents have renewed calls for stronger security measures in rural communities and other areas considered vulnerable to kidnapping and violent attacks.

Residents are calling on the Enugu State Government, security agencies and community leaders to increase surveillance and strengthen security operations in affected areas.

Some residents have also appealed for better support and equipment for local security groups and community vigilantes.

The recent reports have created fear among people living in rural communities, particularly those who travel through isolated roads or attend religious services in areas with limited security presence.

The attack on a church has also raised concerns about the safety of worshippers and religious institutions.

Churches are usually places where people gather peacefully for prayer, worship and community activities. An attack during a religious service can leave worshippers traumatised and create fear within the wider community.

Government Efforts Acknowledged, but More Action Requested

While acknowledging that the government is making efforts to improve security, residents believe that more needs to be done to prevent attacks and respond quickly when criminal activities are reported.

The appeal is not necessarily a criticism of government efforts but a call for stronger protection of lives and property.

Security experts often emphasise the importance of intelligence gathering, community cooperation, rapid emergency response and regular patrols in preventing kidnappings and violent attacks.

Residents have also been encouraged to report suspicious movements and activities to the appropriate security agencies rather than taking the law into their own hands.

Members of the public are advised to avoid spreading unverified information that could cause panic. However, sharing responsible security alerts can also help people become more careful and avoid dangerous areas.

For this reason, information concerning the reported incidents should be handled carefully, with attention given to facts that can be verified.

Investigation and Official Response Expected

As of the time of publishing this report, there was no detailed public statement from the Enugu State Police Command confirming all the circumstances surrounding the reported incidents.

The exact number of people abducted during the church attack and the identities of the victims were also yet to be officially confirmed.

There was also no official confirmation concerning the reported killing of two people and the alleged abduction of about five others in Amaukpa village, Opi.

EOTV will continue to monitor developments and provide updates as more information becomes available from the police, community leaders, church authorities and other reliable sources.

Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies.

Anyone with useful information concerning the incidents should report to the nearest police station or relevant security authority.

Conclusion

The reports from Affa in Udi LGA and Amaukpa in Opi have once again brought attention to the need for stronger security across communities in Enugu State.

The protection of human lives should remain a priority beyond politics, personal interests and public disagreements.

While government efforts to improve security should be recognised, residents are appealing for increased surveillance, stronger security operations and faster responses to threats.

As investigations continue, the hope of residents is that those reportedly taken during the attacks will return safely and that the people responsible will be identified and brought to justice.

The people of Enugu State are also encouraged to remain alert, share security information responsibly and continue to support efforts aimed at protecting communities.

EOTV joins residents in praying for the safety and quick release of all persons reportedly abducted and for peace and security across Enugu State.
