
Enugu State Government Signs Subsidiary Loan Agreement to Advance Women’s Empowerment.
The Enugu State Government, under the leadership of Governor Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, has demonstrated its commitment to inclusive development by formally signing a Subsidiary Loan Agreement for the Nigeria for Women Project (NFWP)a World Bank supported initiative aimed at empowering women economically and socially.
Facilitated through the Ministry of Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, the signing marks a major milestone in Enugu’s gender focused development agenda. The project seeks to expand women’s access to livelihood support, financial services, and capacity-building programs.
In an official statement, the government noted that this development will catalyze efforts to enhance financial inclusion, support women-led enterprises, and improve resilience among vulnerable households. The project is also expected to contribute to Industrialisation, food security, and increased participation of women in the formal economy.
- Establishment of Women Affinity Groups (WAGs)
- Provision of grants and start-up capital
- Training in financial literacy and entrepreneurship
- Support for women-led agricultural and small-scale businesses
Speaking after the conclusion of the 2025 implementation mission, Hon. Ngozi Enih, Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, reaffirmed the Mbah administration’s unwavering dedication to gender equality and economic empowerment.
“Our women are the foundation of our communities and the economy. By executing this agreement and remitting the Counterpart Fund, we are not merely meeting a requirement, we are affirming our belief in the transformative power of investing in women,” she stated.
The State Project Coordinator for the Nigeria for Women Project, Blessing Ogbonna, also expressed gratitude to Governor Mbah for his visionary leadership.
“This signing ushers in a new era of opportunity for women in Enugu State. We are committed to implementing the project effectively and ensuring it delivers tangible results that uplift lives and foster sustainable development,” she said.
Ogbonna added that the project will play a significant role in expanding opportunities for economic independence among women and will contribute meaningfully to the state’s broader development goals.
The Enugu State Government has called on stakeholders, community leaders, and intended beneficiaries to fully embrace the initiative and work collaboratively to ensure its success.
The Nigeria for Women Project is a multi-phase initiative supported by the World Bank, designed to improve livelihoods through inclusive, gender-focused programs that empower women across participating states.
