The Enugu State Government has stepped up efforts to eradicate quackery within the healthcare sector, with particular attention on medical laboratory services, as part of measures to protect residents and improve the quality of healthcare delivery.
The Commissioner for Health, Professor George Ugwu, disclosed this on Friday while receiving the National President of the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN), Mr. Casimir Ifeanyi, in Enugu.
Ugwu expressed concern over the increasing number of unprofessional health establishments operating across communities, noting that some facilities combine laboratory services with pharmacies, treatment centres, provision shops and other unauthorized businesses.
According to the commissioner, such practices fall short of acceptable professional standards and could endanger patients by affecting the accuracy of diagnoses and the overall quality of medical care.
He emphasized that the state government remains committed to eliminating illegal and substandard healthcare operations through stronger regulatory oversight, routine inspections, enforcement actions and strict adherence to professional guidelines.
The health commissioner also praised AMLSN for its contributions to the advancement of medical laboratory science and public health through advocacy, capacity building and professional development programmes.
He assured the association of the ministry’s willingness to partner with professional groups whose objectives align with the administration’s vision of providing accessible, high-quality and people-focused healthcare services.
Highlighting achievements recorded in the health sector under Governor Peter Mbah’s administration, Ugwu pointed to ongoing investments in healthcare infrastructure, workforce development, primary healthcare revitalization and other initiatives designed to enhance service delivery across the state.
He stressed that collaboration between government institutions and healthcare professionals is essential for building a stronger and more resilient health system capable of meeting the needs of residents.
The commissioner further urged medical laboratory scientists to uphold ethical standards, professionalism and best practices in order to strengthen public confidence in healthcare services.
Earlier, AMLSN National President Casimir Ifeanyi informed the commissioner about the association’s forthcoming Annual Public Health Lecture, which is scheduled to take place in Enugu.
Accompanied by members of the association’s national executive and the Enugu State chapter, Ifeanyi sought the support and participation of the state government in the event.
He explained that the lecture is intended to promote public health awareness, improve healthcare delivery and encourage greater collaboration between healthcare professionals and government agencies.
According to him, AMLSN remains dedicated to raising professional standards and supporting initiatives that contribute to better health outcomes in Enugu State and across Nigeria.
He added that sustained cooperation among healthcare stakeholders is vital for strengthening service delivery, encouraging evidence-based practice and driving long-term improvements within the nation’s health sector.
