Medical specialists from Integromed Germany have commenced technical engagements with the Heartland Hospitals Management Corporation (HHMC) as part of efforts to improve hospital management and healthcare delivery in Imo State.

The German team, led by Integromed Germany Managing Director, Dr Soliman Ibrahim, held discussions with the management of HHMC at the corporation’s headquarters in Owerri.

The delegation was received by HHMC Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Emmanuel Ogueri, alongside other members of the management team.

The engagement covered several areas, including specialised medical training, hospital operations, medical equipment management and maintenance, fire safety, infection prevention and control, and improved processes for delivering healthcare services.

Following the meeting, the German experts and HHMC management accompanied Governor Hope Uzodinma to the Heartland Specialist Hospital in Owerri, where they inspected ongoing construction and development work at the facility.

The engagement was part of discussions held between the German delegation and Governor Uzodinma on Monday. The meeting explored opportunities for international technical cooperation, knowledge transfer and professional capacity building within the state’s healthcare system.

Under the proposed collaboration, Integromed experts will provide training for doctors, nurses, other healthcare professionals and clinical trainers working within the state’s hospitals.

The first phase of the programme is expected to be implemented in five hospitals. It will focus on areas such as emergency response, patient management and flow, clinical services, hospital efficiency and the proper use and maintenance of medical equipment.

The initiative is also designed to equip local healthcare workers with the technical skills required to operate and maintain medical equipment, thereby reducing operational gaps and improving hospital services.

Speaking during the engagement, Governor Uzodinma stressed the importance of professional management in ensuring that investments in healthcare infrastructure produce meaningful improvements in patient care.

He also expressed the state’s long-term ambition of developing the capacity to manufacture medical equipment locally.

“Our hope, at the end of the day, is to begin to even manufacture medical equipment in Imo State,” Uzodinma said.

Ogueri assured the German delegation of HHMC’s full cooperation, noting that the partnership would strengthen hospital management and maximise the benefits of the infrastructure being provided by the state government.

He added that technical training and professional capacity development would be essential to converting investments in hospital facilities into better healthcare outcomes for residents.

The partnership comes as Imo continues to expand its healthcare infrastructure. The state government is constructing and rehabilitating general hospitals while upgrading primary healthcare centres across various communities.

Authorities are also working to improve health insurance coverage and pharmaceutical distribution through the Heartland Central Drug Store.

In addition, the government has announced plans to expand specialised medical services, including advanced surgical treatment, within the state.

HHMC said the collaboration with Integromed Germany would help build local technical capacity, particularly in hospital operations and medical equipment management.

The state government expects that improved facilities, specialist services and stronger professional capacity will enhance healthcare delivery, reduce the number of residents travelling outside Imo for treatment and position the state as a stronger healthcare destination.
