The Enugu State Government has celebrated the immediate past Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla (retd.), in recognition of his years of dedicated service to Nigeria and his contributions to national security.
The reception, held at the International Conference Centre in Enugu, brought together senior military officers, government officials, traditional rulers, and other dignitaries to honour the retired naval chief following the completion of his tenure.
Speaking at the event, Governor Peter Mbah described Ogalla as an exceptional leader whose influence went beyond his military rank. According to the governor, genuine leadership is measured by integrity, humility, and the positive impact one leaves on people rather than by position or authority alone.
Mbah praised the former naval chief for his commitment to strengthening security in Enugu State, pointing to the establishment of the naval base in Ogurugu, Uzo Uwani Local Government Area, and the Navy Secondary School in Umuopu, Igbo Eze North Local Government Area. He noted that while the naval base enhances security, the school represents a long-term investment in developing future leaders.
The governor urged public office holders and Nigerians generally to emulate Ogalla’s spirit of service, dedication, and patriotism.
The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd.), also commended the retired naval chief, describing his military career as one marked by professionalism, courage, discipline, innovation, and unwavering commitment to protecting Nigeria’s maritime domain.
Musa further applauded the development taking place in the South-East, particularly in Enugu State, expressing confidence in the region’s progress under Governor Mbah’s administration over the past three years.
Also paying tribute, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, described Ogalla as a calm, intelligent, humble, and highly disciplined officer who inspired younger military personnel through his exemplary leadership. Reflecting on their years together in service, Aneke said the emotional farewell witnessed during Ogalla’s retirement ceremony reflected the respect and admiration he earned throughout his career.
Chairman of the Enugu State Council of Traditional Rulers, Igwe Samuel Asadu, praised Governor Mbah for fulfilling his promise to honour the former naval chief. He also expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for giving Ogalla the opportunity to serve as Chief of the Naval Staff, describing the recognition as a fitting reward for faithful service.
Responding to the honour, Ogalla thanked the Enugu State Government, his family, military colleagues, and friends for their overwhelming support. He expressed special appreciation to Governor Mbah for organising the reception and commended the administration’s efforts in tackling insecurity through both security operations and investments in education, employment, and human development.
According to him, modern security extends beyond military operations to improving the welfare and opportunities available to citizens, adding that Enugu’s development initiatives align with that vision.
Ogalla also expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the opportunity to lead the Nigerian Navy and fulfil his lifelong ambition of serving at the highest level of the force.
Among those present at the ceremony were serving and retired military chiefs as well as prominent political leaders, including former Senate President Ken Nnamani, former Chief of the Naval Staff Rear Admiral Allison Madueke (retd.), and former Chief of the Army Staff Lt. Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika (retd.).
