A Peace Mass Transit (PMT) commercial bus was completely destroyed by fire on Thursday after it reportedly developed a mechanical fault along the Enugu Road near Thinkers Corner in Enugu State.
According to eyewitness accounts, the 18-seater bus began overheating while in motion, causing thick smoke to fill the passenger compartment. Alert passengers quickly noticed the smoke and immediately informed the driver.
The driver promptly pulled the vehicle to the roadside, giving all passengers enough time to safely evacuate with their belongings before the situation worsened.
Moments later, the bus was engulfed in flames and was completely burnt despite efforts to control the fire.
Fortunately, no lives were lost and no injuries were recorded in the incident, as everyone on board escaped safely before the fire spread through the vehicle.
The exact cause of the overheating has not been officially confirmed, and there has been no formal statement from the transport company or emergency authorities at the time of filing this report.
The incident caused concern among motorists and residents around the Thinkers Corner axis, with several road users stopping to observe the burning vehicle. Videos and photographs of the incident have since circulated widely on social media.
Road safety experts have continued to stress the importance of regular vehicle maintenance, especially for commercial transport operators, to help prevent mechanical failures that could lead to fire outbreaks and other accidents.
While the destruction of the vehicle represents a significant loss, many have expressed gratitude that no lives were lost.
The incident serves as another reminder of the importance of prompt emergency response, regular vehicle inspections, and passenger vigilance while travelling.
