Enugu, Nigeria Excitement is growing in Enugu as athletes from Nigeria and beyond prepare for the second edition of the Enugu City International Marathon, scheduled to take place on Saturday, August 29, 2026.
Registration for the highly anticipated race is gaining momentum, with elite, grassroots and international athletes showing strong interest in taking part in the event.
According to the organisers, the growing number of registrations is a sign that the Enugu City International Marathon is becoming an important event on Nigeria’s athletics calendar. The marathon is organized by Nilayo Sports Management Limited with the support of the Enugu State Government.
Athletes Show Strong Interest
The Chief Executive Officer of Nilayo Sports Management, Mrs Yetunde Olopade, expressed satisfaction with the number of athletes who have registered for this year’s marathon.
She said both local and international athletes, including elite runners, have been registering for the race.
Olopade also encouraged young and talented athletes from the South East and South South regions to take advantage of the opportunity and register while registration remains open.
The organisers believe the marathon can provide a valuable platform for Nigerian athletes to compete, gain experience and showcase their talent in front of a wider audience.
For young runners in Enugu and other parts of the South East, the event also presents an opportunity to compete alongside experienced athletes from different parts of Nigeria and other countries.
Enugu Set to Host a Major Sporting Event
The 2026 Enugu City International Marathon is more than just a running competition. The organisers and the state government are positioning the event as part of efforts to promote sports, tourism, healthy living and economic development in Enugu.
The official marathon website describes the event as a road race designed to promote athletic excellence, tourism, community engagement and healthy lifestyles, while helping to position Enugu as an important sports destination.
The 2026 edition carries the theme “Tomorrow Runs Here.” The theme reflects the organizers’ focus on youth empowerment, discovering new athletic talent and using sports to create opportunities for young people.
The event is also expected to bring visitors and athletes from different cities and countries to the Coal City.
Two Major Race Categories
The Enugu City International Marathon will feature two main race categories: the 42KM Marathon and the 10KM Road Race.
The 42KM race is the main elite marathon and is scheduled to begin at 6:30am. According to the organisers, the race will start around Shoprite on Abakaliki Road and finish at Michael Okpara Square.
The 10KM Road Race will also finish at Michael Okpara Square and is designed to provide an opportunity for recreational runners and fitness enthusiasts to participate in the event. The official marathon website currently lists the 10KM start time as 9:30am.
Both races are expected to attract athletes and fitness lovers, while spectators will also have the opportunity to watch the runners pass through some of Enugu’s major roads and landmarks.
Race Route to Showcase Enugu
One of the interesting parts of the marathon is the route through Enugu.
The organisers say the race route has been designed to showcase the city’s landscape, landmarks, infrastructure and culture.
The 42KM route will pass through several parts of the city before finishing at Michael Okpara Square. This means residents and visitors will have an opportunity to experience the marathon while also seeing different parts of Enugu.
The event is therefore expected to create a lively atmosphere across the city as runners, supporters, volunteers, businesses and spectators come together.
Marathon Expo Coming Before Race Day
Ahead of the main race, organizers have also announced a five day Marathon Expo and race-kit collection exercise.
The Expo is scheduled to take place from Monday, August 24, to Friday, August 28, 2026, at Michael Okpara Square, Independence Layout, Enugu.
It will open daily from 9:00am to 6:00pm.
Registered participants will be able to collect their race kits during the Expo. Participants are expected to present their registration confirmation email and a valid means of identification.
The organisers say the Expo will go beyond race kit collection. It is expected to feature sports brands, health and wellness activities, exhibitors, networking opportunities and cultural activities.
This could make the week leading to the marathon a major attraction for residents and visitors in Enugu.
Boost for Tourism and the Local Economy
The marathon could also provide a boost for businesses in Enugu.
With athletes and visitors coming into the city, hotels, restaurants, transportation businesses, shops and other service providers could benefit from increased activity around the event.
