Enugu CP Orders Strict Enforcement of Traffic Laws, Warns Offenders

By Isaac Mission

The Enugu State Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has directed the immediate and strict enforcement of existing traffic laws and regulations across the state.

The directive follows growing concerns over motorists’ disregard for traffic regulations, which the police said has contributed to avoidable traffic congestion, disruption of traffic flow, road crashes, loss of lives and destruction of property.

The Commissioner’s order is also in compliance with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for the nationwide enforcement of traffic laws aimed at restoring order on Nigerian roads and protecting lives and property.

According to a statement issued by the Enugu State Police Command’s spokesman, SP Daniel Ndukwe, CP Giwa has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, the Command’s Legal Officer and the State Traffic Officer to ensure professional implementation of the directive.

Ndukwe said offenders would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with existing laws and regulations.

However, the Commissioner cautioned police officers and other personnel involved in the enforcement exercise against violating the rights and dignity of members of the public.

Giwa also urged all motorists, including police officers and other security personnel, to familiarise themselves with traffic regulations and ensure strict compliance to avoid arrest and prosecution.

He stressed that adherence to traffic laws is critical to reducing congestion, preventing road crashes and maintaining the free flow of traffic across Enugu State.

The Commissioner called on road users to cooperate with the enforcement exercise in the interest of public safety and order.
