Enugu LG polls: NDC completes candidate screening, tasks ENSIEC on transparency

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced that all its candidates seeking elective positions in the forthcoming Enugu State local government elections have successfully passed the screening exercise conducted by the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC).

Addressing journalists in Enugu on Monday, the party’s state chairman, Dr. Johnpaul Anih, disclosed that the NDC fielded more than 14 chairmanship candidates and over 210 councillorship aspirants across the 17 local government areas of the state.

Anih stated that the party had already begun intensive campaigns ahead of the September 26 council elections, which he described as a crucial political exercise that could provide insight into the state's readiness for the 2027 general elections.

He commended ENSIEC for ensuring transparency and fairness during the screening process and urged the commission to maintain the same standards throughout the electoral period.

According to him, the commission's conduct so far has inspired confidence among political parties. However, he warned that any attempt to compromise the integrity of the elections would be challenged through legitimate legal channels.

The NDC chairman further noted that the party's candidates emerged from a transparent primary election monitored by both electoral officials and security agencies. He expressed confidence in their ability to provide effective leadership and drive development at the grassroots level.

“Our candidates were chosen through a credible process that reflected the collective will of our members. They have the experience, integrity and public support required to deliver meaningful governance in their respective local government areas,” he said.

He added that the party remained optimistic of victory if the elections were conducted in a free and fair manner.

Also speaking, the NDC State Secretary, Dr. Sebastine Okafor, expressed confidence in the party's chances at the polls, noting that its candidates enjoy strong community support due to their records of service and commitment to local development.

He said many residents were increasingly seeking credible alternatives capable of delivering accountable leadership and effective representation.

Okafor praised ENSIEC for creating an enabling environment for political participation and stressed that sustaining such standards would strengthen public confidence in the electoral process.

He urged the people of Enugu State to support the NDC's vision for grassroots transformation, accountability and development.

According to him, the party is determined to provide an alternative to ineffective governance by promoting leaders who are committed to the welfare and progress of the people.

“We are offering a platform focused on accountability, development and people-centred leadership. We call on the people of Enugu to support our candidates and partner with us in building local governments that truly serve the interests of the citizens,” he said.
