The leadership of Nigeria's National Assembly has officially directed the complete suspension of all official visits to the Republic of South Africa. In addition to halting physical travel, the legislature announced a total boycott of all South African-hosted or South African-organized legislative activities, conferences, workshops, and virtual parliamentary engagements until further notice. This decisive step was taken by the Senate and the House of Representatives following deep-seated concerns over the ongoing safety of Nigerian citizens residing within the foreign nation.
According to an official statement released by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Mr. Kamoru Ogunlana, and backed by House spokesman Akin Rotimi, the decision comes as a direct response to persistent reports of violence, intimidation, and the destruction of property targeting Nigerians and other African nationals. Lawmakers expressed grave concern that citizens have faced physical harm, displacement, and the forceful abandonment of their legitimate businesses and homes. Despite multiple appeals made by the Federal Government of Nigeria and various stakeholders for South African authorities to ensure adequate protection, reports of hostile attacks have continued to surface.
The legislative directive applies broadly to all distinguished senators, honorable members, standing committees, departments, directorates, and general staff. No official delegation or individual member is permitted to partake in any affected South African program without explicit prior authorization from the leadership of the National Assembly. However, leadership clarified that this stern measure is not designed to permanently damage bilateral relations or completely sever the deep historical and people-to-people ties shared between Nigeria and South Africa. Rather, it serves as a firm expression of discontent regarding the welfare and dignity of Nigerians living abroad.
The Nigerian legislature strongly urged the South African government to take immediate, concrete actions to safeguard foreign nationals, investigate reported crimes thoroughly, and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice. The suspension will remain enforced until further notice, though it remains subject to future review depending on how the security situation evolves.
