The US President Donald Trump experienced an unexpected delay at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland after an emergency evacuation slide accidentally deployed on his aircraft. The incident involved the Boeing 747-8 jet gifted by the Qatari royal family, which currently serves as Air Force One. The mishap occurred just as Donald Trump was preparing to board the plane for a flight to Dallas, Texas, where he was scheduled to address the Republican Party's midterm convention.
The incident unfolded on the tarmac as White House reporters and staff waited for the president to transfer from Marine One to the presidential aircraft. Observers spotted a large inflatable emergency slide fully extended from the right side of the Boeing 747, opposite the side traditionally used for presidential boarding. Because the emergency equipment was deployed, Donald Trump remained inside Marine One for over 20 minutes while military personnel and ground maintenance crews examined the situation and safely removed the slide from the aircraft.
Addressing journalists on the tarmac before boarding, Donald Trump downplayed safety concerns regarding the jet. He explained to reporters that technicians were conducting a routine check on the emergency evacuation system to ensure that all equipment functioned correctly.
When asked directly by journalists whether he was completely confident that the aircraft was safe for flight, Donald Trump responded that he was confident, noting that he would not board the plane if he felt unsafe. White House communications officials later confirmed that the slide had been checked out, removed, and cleared before takeoff.
Reports indicated that military personnel had accidentally triggered the deployment mechanism prior to passenger boarding.
Despite the quick resolution of the issue on the tarmac, the event has renewed public scrutiny and debate regarding the Qatari-gifted aircraft.
The luxury Boeing 747 was accepted by the administration to serve as a temporary bridge aircraft while official replacement presidential jets remain in production. Since entering presidential service, the plane has faced continuous debate regarding foreign gifts, security modifications, and defense protocols. Recent events have also drawn attention to the aircraft, including plans to take the jet out of service temporarily for security upgrades.
Once ground crews safely detached the emergency slide and completed their technical clearance, the presidential jet departed Joint Base Andrews without further complications. Donald Trump arrived safely in Dallas to deliver his keynote address to supporters at the Republican midterm convention.
