New Enugu City Excites Nigerians in China as Governor Peter Mbah Unveils Vision for a Smart City

The New Enugu City project, an ambitious flagship initiative under the leadership of Governor Peter Mbah, has ignited excitement among Nigerians living in China, especially in the Guangdong Province. The governor's recent roadshow in Guangzhou was met with great enthusiasm, as the Nigerian diaspora, including members of the Igbo community and Enugu State indigenes, rallied in support of the project. Governor Mbah presented the New Enugu City as a modern, smart city that will transform Enugu State into a premier destination for business, investment, tourism, and living.

This event was not just a roadshow—it was an opportunity to connect with the Nigerian diaspora in China, particularly those involved in various successful businesses in Guangzhou. Governor Mbah's unveiling of the New Enugu City marked a significant milestone in his administration’s drive to attract strategic partnerships and diaspora investment, with the goal of revitalising Enugu State and positioning it as one of the top destinations in Nigeria.

The Vision of the New Enugu City

Governor Mbah’s vision for Enugu State revolves around creating a smart city that combines cutting-edge infrastructure with a thriving economic environment. The New Enugu City is being developed in collaboration with China Communications and Construction Company (CCCC), one of the world's leading construction firms. The project, which commenced in October 2023, is already well underway, and the governor is confident that critical services within the first phase of the city will be completed within 12 to 18 months.

According to Governor Mbah, New Enugu City is designed to be a fully serviced, innovative, and sustainable urban space that will rival some of the best cities worldwide. "We understand the value of achieving great economic growth, but we also know that it should happen in a very conducive residential area," Mbah said. "That was essentially what gave birth to the New Enugu City."

The smart city will be home to residential areas, medical centers, sports arenas, corporate offices, and an innovation park, creating an environment that fosters business growth and high-quality living. Services such as power, water, gas, and high-speed internet will all be provided, ensuring that the city is not only a place to live but also a hub for innovation and productivity.

A Warm Reception in Guangzhou

Governor Mbah’s visit to Guangzhou, China, was a remarkable event, with members of the Nigerian and Igbo communities turning out in large numbers to welcome him. The roadshow was filled with fanfare, traditional music, and cultural performances, demonstrating the pride and excitement that Nigerians abroad feel about the future of Enugu State.

The governor’s efforts were lauded by key figures in the Nigerian community in China, including the Consul-General of the Nigerian Mission in Guangzhou, Ambassador George Onwuekwe, the President of the Nigerian Community in Guangzhou, Adebutu Olanrewaju, and the President of the Enugu State Association, Guangzhou, Hyacinth Ezeka. These leaders expressed their admiration for Governor Mbah’s bold vision for Enugu and his proactive approach to engaging with the diaspora.

Hyacinth Ezeka, in particular, emphasised that the New Enugu City aligns with the long-held dreams of Enugu indigenes. "We are delighted for such development in Enugu State. If the governor continues this way, Enugu State will be the best in South-East and Nigeria," he said. "What he is pushing for is the dream we have had for Enugu for a very long time now."

Securing Diaspora Investments and Partnerships

One of the main objectives of Governor Mbah’s roadshow in Guangzhou was to secure investments from Nigerians in the diaspora, particularly those with successful businesses in China. The governor urged the Nigerian community to consider Enugu as a prime location for investment, citing the tremendous growth potential of the state and the favorable business environment being created by his administration.

Adebutu Olanrewaju, President of the Nigerian Community in Guangzhou, pointed out that despite the numerous Nigerian businesses flourishing in the region, Governor Mbah is the first Nigerian government official to engage directly with them. This personal outreach resonated with the diaspora, many of whom expressed strong interest in the New Enugu City project.

Governor Mbah noted that the overwhelming expression of interest from the Nigerian diaspora was a clear indication of the project's potential success. "Our engagement with diasporans in the Guangdong Province has been a tremendous success because what we have seen here is a huge expression of interest," he said. "The people have continually expressed interest to invest and to also come and take up a place at the New Enugu City."

Strategic Partnerships for a World-Class City

Governor Mbah emphasised that the success of the New Enugu City project hinges on strategic partnerships with world-class organisations. The collaboration with CCCC is central to the city’s development, as the Chinese firm brings extensive expertise in large-scale infrastructure projects. CCCC is committed to delivering a city that meets international standards, and the first phase of construction is progressing rapidly.

In addition to working with CCCC, Governor Mbah revealed that his administration is also partnering with consulting firms from the United Kingdom. These firms are providing valuable input on the design and development of the city, ensuring that it incorporates global best practices in urban planning and sustainability.

The Managing Director of CCCC Nigeria, Feng Yu, expressed delight at the partnership with the Enugu State government, reaffirming the company's commitment to making the New Enugu City a reality. "We are excited to be working with the Mbah Administration to actualise this visionary project," Yu said.

A Future Built on Innovation and Opportunity

The New Enugu City project represents more than just a real estate development—it is a symbol of Enugu State's bright future. Governor Mbah’s administration is committed to creating a state where opportunities abound for all, and the smart city is a cornerstone of that vision. With its mix of residential, commercial, and recreational facilities, the city will attract investors, tourists, and new residents, positioning Enugu as one of the top three states by GDP in Nigeria.

As construction progresses and partnerships solidify, the New Enugu City is poised to become a model of modern urban living in Nigeria. Governor Mbah’s unwavering commitment to growth and innovation is driving Enugu State toward a prosperous future, and the diaspora community's enthusiastic response in Guangzhou is a testament to the project's far-reaching appeal.

In the next 12 to 18 months, critical services in New Enugu City will be ready, and the skyline will begin to rise as the project takes shape. For Nigerians at home and abroad, the New Enugu City is a dream that is quickly becoming a reality—one that promises to redefine the landscape of Enugu State and set a new standard for smart cities across Africa.
