Osborn Nweze Umahi, the 28-year-old son of Minister of Works David Umahi, has been elected chairman of Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
Umahi contested the local government election under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and emerged victorious following a campaign focused on grassroots development, economic growth and better administration.
Following his victory, the newly elected council chairman announced that he would forgo his official salary and allowances for the duration of his tenure.
He said the decision was aimed at directing more government resources towards projects and programmes that would benefit residents rather than using public funds for personal financial gains.
Umahi also outlined plans to concentrate on infrastructure development, youth empowerment, job and economic opportunities, as well as improving the delivery of basic services across Ohaozara.
During the election campaign, he positioned himself as part of a younger generation seeking to introduce new ideas into public administration. He promised to apply private-sector principles, efficiency and innovation to the management of the local government.
The new council chairman said strengthening governance at the grassroots level was essential to addressing the economic and social difficulties facing residents.
His victory adds another political role to the Umahi family in Ebonyi, with his father, David Umahi, currently serving as Minister of Works and previously governing the state.
Umahi said his administration would remain focused on practical development and improving the quality of life of people across Ohaozara throughout his tenure.
