The peace and security of Osun State have once again been thrust into the spotlight following a violent clash that resulted in the tragic death of a prominent political figure and transport union stakeholder. According to reports making rounds across major news platforms, Olalekan Ajagungbade, popularly known as Emir Ajagungbade and a notable member of the Accord Party, was shot dead during a chaotic confrontation. The incident, which has triggered widespread shock and concern among residents, occurred at the Mayfair Garage in the historic town of Ile-Ife.
Preliminary information gathered regarding the incident indicates that the tragic altercation stemmed from a fierce and protracted leadership dispute over the control and management of motor parks within the area. Motor parks and transport union operations in the southwestern region have historically been plagued by factional rivalries, where competing groups jostle for authority, revenue collection rights, and supremacy. In this specific instance, the confrontation reportedly involved multiple factions and individuals associated with transport networks, turning a routine administrative or leadership disagreement into a fatal encounter. The loss of life has once again brought to the forefront the urgent need to address violence and instability linked to garage management structures.
Reacting swiftly to the distressing news, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke expressed profound concern over the breakdown of law and order. Demonstrating a strong stance against violence, the governor ordered a comprehensive and immediate probe into the circumstances surrounding the killing. He explicitly directed the state Commissioner of Police and other security operatives to track down every individual directly or indirectly involved in the clash, ensuring that no culprit is spared or treated as a sacred cow.
Governor Adeleke emphasized that his administration will not tolerate lawlessness or thuggery disguised as transport union politics, maintaining that the safety of citizens remains a top priority.
In addition to ordering prompt arrests and a full-scale investigation, Governor Adeleke announced decisive administrative measures to permanently address the root cause of such recurring violence. He revealed that the state government is officially reintroducing the Park Management System to bring discipline, accountability, and absolute orderliness to motor parks and garages across all local government areas in Osun State. To give immediate legal and structural effect to this framework, the governor stated that he will issue an executive order empowering the new management system to oversee daily operations and eliminate unauthorized militant control by rival groups.
Community leaders, security experts, and political stakeholders have joined the government in calling for absolute calm across Ile-Ife and the wider state. Residents have been urged to avoid taking laws into their own hands and to cooperate fully with security agencies by providing credible information that could aid ongoing investigations. As security patrols are heightened in strategic locations to prevent any potential reprisal attacks, the people of Osun State hope that this firm government intervention will permanently curb transport union violence and restore lasting peace to local motor parks.
