The Abia State Police Command has rescued nine victims of kidnapping and human trafficking and arrested more than 222 suspects during its first month under Commissioner of Police Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi.
The arrests were made in connection with over 152 reported cases between August 10 and September 11, 2026, as the command intensified operations against criminal activities across the state.
Afolabi disclosed the figures on Friday in Umuahia while presenting his maiden operational assessment since assuming office.
According to him, the suspects comprise more than 212 males and 10 females. Several have been charged to court, while investigations into other cases remain ongoing.
The commissioner also announced the recovery of 17 firearms and 101 rounds of ammunition and cartridges, alongside the dismantling of a suspected car-theft syndicate and the destruction of drug dens.
Doctor Rescued Hours After Abduction
Among the victims rescued was 44-year-old medical doctor, Dr Ikenna Ilo, who was allegedly kidnapped on August 19.
Police said operatives traced the vehicle conveying the doctor towards Imo State and collaborated with the Imo State Police Command to secure his release early the following day.
