The Enugu State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has elected Dr. Martin Chukwunweike as the new State Chairman and Hon. Chukwudi Nnadozie as Secretary. They will lead a 37-member executive committee of the party in the state.
The new executives were elected on Tuesday during the party’s state congress held at Okpara Square. Members of the APC national panel described the exercise as peaceful, free, fair, and credible. In addition, 15 zonal executives, five from each of the three senatorial zones, were also elected.
Governor Peter Mbah commended party members for conducting a peaceful and transparent congress. He also praised the economic policies of President Bola Tinubu, saying they have increased revenue to states and helped development efforts in Enugu.
Mbah said Enugu is not only a model for governance but also for politics. He described the unity within the party as genuine and not just for convenience. He congratulated the new executives and urged them to continue the good work of the former caretaker committee led by Dr. Ben Nwoye.
The governor also asked the new leadership to properly inform people at the grassroots about his administration’s reforms and projects, especially as future elections approach.
Speaking on national economic reforms, Mbah said the President’s bold decisions have improved the economy, stabilized the exchange rate, strengthened the naira, and increased Nigeria’s foreign reserves. He added that joining the APC has brought several benefits to Enugu State.
According to him, the Enugu International Airport and its cargo terminal have been concessioned to a private investor, which will turn Enugu into a major aviation hub. He also said approval has been given for the completion of the railway line linking Enugu, as well as for the South East Development Commission and a high-pressure gas pipeline project expected to boost energy supply in the state.
In his acceptance speech, Dr. Chukwunweike promised that the new executive would work hard to ensure the re-election of Governor Mbah and President Tinubu. He expressed confidence in the governor’s performance.
Former caretaker chairman, Dr. Ben Nwoye, said the party is now united, bringing together old APC members and former members of the Peoples Democratic Party into one strong team.
The National Deputy Chairman (South), Chief Emma Enukwu, encouraged the new leaders to prepare well for upcoming elections, noting that political leadership is judged by the ability to win votes.
Members of the APC national panel, led by Hon. Loveth Idisi described the congress as successful and transparent. They also praised the development and cleanliness of Enugu State.
Several political leaders attended the event, including the Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Hon. Uchenna Ugwu; Senator Osita Ngwu; Deputy Governor Barr. Ifeanyi Ossai; and other top government officials.
