Residents of College Street and Port Harcourt Street in the New Layout area of Enugu have raised an alarm over the construction of a gas plant in their neighborhood. They have called on the Executive Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, to urgently intervene.
The residents said the gas plant is being built along College Road, right in the middle of their community. They described the situation as dangerous, especially because the area is busy and highly populated.
Speaking during a press conference organized by the residents and the Landlords’ Association, their spokesman, Comrade Chika Enwerem, said a gas plant, which contains highly flammable materials, should be located in a secure place with proper fencing to prevent accidents.
He explained that the plant is being constructed along the ever-busy College Road. He added that due to the ongoing road development projects carried out by Governor Mbah, the area has attracted more traffic and new residents, making it even more risky to site a gas plant there.
According to him, placing such a highly flammable facility along a major road exposes residents and road users to serious danger that could lead to devastating consequences.
In a united appeal, the residents and the Landlords’ Association called on the governor to use his office to stop further construction of the gas plant. They said this action is necessary to prevent any possible disaster that could affect the community because of the dangerous nature of the facility.
