Fuel Tanker Suffers Brake Failure on Ugwu Onyeama Hill, Enugu

By Peace Orjiani

A potentially devastating disaster was averted on Saturday after a fully loaded fuel tanker reportedly suffered brake failure while descending the notorious Ugwu Onyeama Hill in Enugu State, causing fuel to spill across a significant portion of the roadway.

According to eyewitness accounts, the tanker lost braking power while navigating the steep descent, forcing the driver into a dangerous situation. The incident resulted in a large quantity of fuel spilling onto the road, raising fears of a possible explosion or fire that could have endangered motorists, residents, and nearby businesses.

Emergency responders from the Enugu State Fire Service arrived promptly at the scene and immediately began efforts to contain the fuel spill and prevent any source of ignition. Their swift and coordinated response successfully brought the situation under control before it could escalate into a major fire disaster.

The incident caused temporary disruption to traffic as emergency officials secured the area and ensured the road was safe for motorists. No fatalities or injuries had been reported at the time of filing this report.

Ugwu Onyeama Hill has long been regarded as one of the most dangerous routes for heavy-duty vehicles in Enugu State due to its steep gradient and winding descent. Over the years, several accidents involving trucks and tankers have occurred along the route, prompting repeated calls for stricter enforcement of vehicle maintenance standards and improved road safety measures.

Road safety experts have continued to advise operators of heavy-duty vehicles to carry out regular maintenance, especially on braking systems, before embarking on journeys through hilly terrains. Drivers are also urged to adhere to speed limits and exercise extra caution while navigating the route.

Residents and road users have praised the Enugu State Fire Service for their professionalism and quick intervention, noting that their prompt response prevented what could have been a catastrophic incident involving loss of lives, destruction of property, and extensive environmental damage.

Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the reported brake failure while continuing efforts to enhance safety on one of Enugu’s busiest and most challenging highways.

Enugu Online TV will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as more official information becomes available.
