The Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu community has been thrown into mourning following the death of one of its former senior administrators, Prof. Godwin Emezue.

Emezue, who previously served as the university’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), died on August 26, 2026, after a brief illness.

News of his death was announced on behalf of the Emezue family by his personal assistant, Austin Chinemerem Okpechi. The announcement described his passing as a painful shock to the family, colleagues, students and the wider academic community.

During his years at ABSU, Prof. Emezue made significant contributions to the university’s academic and administrative development. His tenure as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) was marked by a strong emphasis on maintaining academic standards, improving institutional procedures and promoting excellence.

Before his appointment as Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Emezue served as Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), ABSU chapter.

In that role, he was actively involved in issues concerning the welfare of academic staff, university autonomy and professional standards. Colleagues remembered him for his principled approach to union affairs and his efforts to improve working conditions for university lecturers.

Beyond his leadership positions, Emezue was also respected as a teacher, scholar and mentor. Members of the university community said his guidance had a lasting impact on younger academics and students who came under his influence.

His contributions to the academic and administrative life of ABSU are expected to remain part of the institution’s history.

The family is yet to announce details of the burial, saying information about the funeral arrangements will be made public in due course.

Meanwhile, members of the ABSU community and well-wishers have continued to sympathise with the Emezue family over the loss.
