FCT Police Rescue Two Abandoned Babies, Seek Help to Trace Their Mothers
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has rescued two babies who were abandoned in separate incidents in Kurudu and Gwagwalada areas of Abuja. The two cases happened on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, and the police are now appealing to members of the public for information that could help identify the babies’ mothers or other family members.
The first incident happened around Obodo Street in Kurudu at about 5:30 p.m. A resident identified as Mr. Innocent reportedly heard the cry of a baby. When he checked the area, he discovered a baby boy carefully wrapped in cloth and placed inside a carton box. He immediately reported the discovery at the Kurudu Police Station.
Following the report, officers from the Kurudu Division and personnel from the Juveniles and Women Care Department were sent to the location. The baby was rescued and taken to a nearby hospital for medical assessment. The police said the child was in stable condition and was later handed over to the Social Welfare Department for further care.
A second case occurred later that night in Gwagwalada. At about 9:40 p.m., a resident identified as Mr. Ibrahim heard a baby crying outside his gate. He and other concerned members of the community checked the area and found a baby girl who appeared to have been abandoned. They rescued her and reported the matter to the Gwagwalada Police Station at about 10:15 p.m.
The baby girl was taken by personnel from the Juveniles and Women Care Department to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital for medical examination and care. According to the police, she is receiving attention before being handed over to the Social Welfare Department. Investigations are continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding both cases.
The FCT Police Command praised Mr. Innocent, Mr. Ibrahim and other community members for acting quickly to protect the babies and alert the authorities. The Command has also appealed to anyone who may have information about the children’s mothers or relatives to come forward and report to the nearest police station. The incidents have once again highlighted the importance of community members paying attention to vulnerable children and reporting suspicious situations to the appropriate authorities.
