The newly inaugurated Chairman of the Nigerian Youth Congress (NYC) in Imo State, Prince Stanley Ugochukwu, has urged youth organisations across the state to unite with the congress in pushing for greater youth participation, empowerment and representation.
Ugochukwu made the call in Owerri during his first press briefing since assuming office as chairman of the organisation.
He said his administration would adopt an inclusive approach and collaborate with various youth groups to promote development across Imo State.
The NYC chairman also appealed to Governor Hope Uzodimma and members of his cabinet to strengthen democratic governance and implement policies capable of improving the living conditions of residents.
He particularly called on the state Ministry of Youth and Talent Hunt to accelerate programmes aimed at creating opportunities for young people through government employment, civil and public service recruitment, skills acquisition, vocational training and formal education.
According to Ugochukwu, addressing youth unemployment and poverty would help reduce hardship and vulnerability among young people.
He said, “I am calling on every youth leader in Imo State to cue in with the NYC leadership to strengthen youth welfare and empowerment. We are willing to work cordially and effectively with all the youths of Imo in order to improve good governance.”
Ugochukwu expressed concern over the economic challenges facing young people, saying his leadership would engage the state government, particularly the Commissioner for Youth and Talent Hunt, Dr Emeka Mandela Ukaegbu, to expand opportunities for youths.
He identified digital and ICT training, vocational trades and increased access to political offices through elections and appointments as areas requiring greater attention.
He noted that empowering young people would enable them to contribute more effectively to the state's economy while also helping to promote peace and reduce crime.
NYC Chairman Commends Uzodimma's Administration
The NYC chairman also praised the administration of Governor Uzodimma, saying some of its projects and policies had contributed to increased economic and commercial activities in the state.
He specifically mentioned road infrastructure, the Orashi Electricity Project and the establishment of a Robotic and Ontology Surgery Centre among the initiatives he described as significant.
Ugochukwu said the projects had contributed to improvements in areas including infrastructure, security, social development and economic activity.
He further expressed appreciation to the NYC National President, Engr. Jethro Annum, for appointing him to lead the organisation in Imo.
The new chairman pledged to prioritise the interests of young people across the state, promising to work with relevant stakeholders to improve their welfare, opportunities and participation in governance.
