Ride-hailing giant Uber has officially discontinued its operations in Nigeria, bringing an end to its 12-year presence in the country.
The company announced that it would wind down its Nigerian operations effective Wednesday, September 2, 2026, following what it described as a thorough review of its business and evolving priorities.
Uber first launched its services in Lagos in 2014, later expanding its app-based transportation services to other parts of Nigeria.
In a message sent to customers, the company expressed appreciation to Nigerians who used its platform over the years and apologised for the disruption its exit may cause.
Why is Uber leaving Nigeria?
Uber has not disclosed a specific single reason for its departure. The company said the decision followed a review of its business priorities and investment focus across Africa.
The exit comes amid increasing competition and rising operating pressures in Nigeria’s ride-hailing industry, including higher fuel costs, inflation and currency volatility.
Uber has also clarified that its decision to leave Nigeria is not related to the recent Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) directive concerning e-hailing operations at Nigerian airports.
Uber also exits Uganda
The company’s decision affects Nigeria and Uganda, while Uber says its operations in other African markets will continue.
Uber Help Centre to remain open
Although Uber’s ride-hailing operations have ended in Nigeria, its Help Centre will remain available until September 23, 2026, allowing users to resolve outstanding account-related issues.
Uber’s departure marks a major development in Nigeria’s rapidly evolving ride-hailing sector and leaves millions of riders and drivers adjusting to a market that already includes several competing transportation platforms.
