Mbah’s New Appointments Trigger Political Debate in Enugu

By Isaac Mission

The recent appointment of additional officials by Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has sparked criticism from opposition voices, but the governor’s Special Adviser on Media, Onyekwere Nwobodo, has defended the decision as a necessary step to strengthen the state’s administration.

In a commentary, Nwobodo argued that expanding or adjusting a government’s team is a normal part of administration, particularly when vacancies arise or new areas of expertise are required.

He questioned the criticism surrounding the appointments, asking whether a government should be expected to select every official it would ever need at the beginning of its tenure.

According to him, the latest appointments should instead be viewed as an attempt to address gaps within the governance structure, including concerns over the representation of certain areas.

Nwobodo maintained that appointing individuals from previously underrepresented communities was preferable to allowing such concerns to remain unresolved.

He also suggested that some of the opposition to the appointments was politically motivated, particularly because some of the newly appointed individuals had previously held political positions or supported candidates opposed to Mbah during the 2023 governorship election.

The governor’s aide described Mbah’s willingness to work with former political opponents as evidence of political maturity and an emphasis on governance rather than personal differences.

He said the governor’s approach was based largely on what individuals could contribute to his administration and to the development of Enugu State, rather than on their previous political affiliations.

Nwobodo further praised Mbah for being receptive to professional and technical advice, arguing that the governor was not interested in surrounding himself exclusively with individuals who would simply agree with him.

He dismissed the criticism of the latest appointments as largely inconsequential, maintaining that the important issue should be whether the new appointees can contribute meaningfully to the administration’s objectives.

The governor’s media adviser urged the newly appointed officials to justify the confidence placed in them by focusing on service delivery and adding value to the state.

He added that a government committed to improving its performance would necessarily continue to review and adjust its administrative structure as new demands emerge.

According to Nwobodo, such changes should be seen as part of the process of strengthening governance and ensuring that Enugu State has the personnel required to effectively execute its development agenda.
