A youth-focused non-governmental organisation, The Potter’s Will Foundation (TPWF), has announced plans to provide free vocational training for student leaders across higher institutions in Enugu State.
The initiative is being developed in partnership with the Council of Students Union Government, Enugu State chapter, following discussions at the organisation’s maiden leadership conference held in Enugu.
The conference, held on Friday, August 28, at the International Conference Centre of the Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu, focused on equipping student leaders with leadership skills and practical knowledge that can be applied beyond the university environment.
The event, themed “Leadership Without Borders: Building a Strong Network of Student Leaders in Enugu State,” brought together current and former Students’ Union Government presidents, student representatives, government officials, entrepreneurs, development partners, security agencies and other stakeholders.
Speaking at the event, the Chairman of COSEN, Godsown Odilichukwu Onuzulike, said the conference was designed to broaden the understanding of leadership among students and encourage them to remain active in community and societal development after leaving office.
He said leadership should not be restricted to campus politics, adding that student leaders should develop the character, skills, networks and experience required to contribute meaningfully to government, business and their communities.
Onuzulike explained that the proposed vocational training would complement formal education by giving students access to practical skills that could potentially create additional sources of income.
He said the partnership with TPWF would enable practical training to reach students in different higher institutions across the state.
According to him, the initiative would encourage young people to explore entrepreneurship, skills acquisition, public service and community development while still pursuing their academic programmes.
Government urges students to prepare for leadership.
Representing the Secretary to the Enugu State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, Hon. Edeani M. Edeani encouraged student leaders to view themselves as future policymakers, professionals, entrepreneurs and community leaders.
Similarly, Hon. Chima Obieze, who represents Ezeagu Constituency in the Enugu State House of Assembly, stressed the importance of responsible leadership, service and commitment to community development.
Participants at the conference also highlighted the need for student leaders from different institutions to establish stronger networks and collaborate on initiatives capable of benefiting young people across the state.
Entrepreneurship and drug abuse discussed
A panel session featured discussions on entrepreneurship, personal development, youth empowerment and drug abuse.
Obi Okeke, Chief Executive Officer of Auto Ease, spoke on entrepreneurship and encouraged young people to develop practical abilities that could translate into sustainable economic opportunities.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency also participated in the discussion. Its representatives addressed the dangers of drug abuse among young people and the role student leaders can play in promoting safer environments within educational institutions.
Other officials and stakeholders present included representatives of the South East Development Commission, Enugu State Community and Social Development Agency, the Enugu State Government, NANS and various local government administrations.
Student leaders receive recognition
The conference also featured an awards presentation to individuals recognised for their contributions to student development, youth empowerment, leadership and community service.
Among those honoured were Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, Secretary to the State Government Chidiebere Onyia, Obi Okeke, Mark Onuoha, Kelvin Okeke, Prisca Okeke Gbamilar and Dan Anike, among others.
The organisers said the awards were intended to recognise people whose activities and support have positively impacted students and young people.
The conference was attended by student union leaders from several institutions in the state, alongside members of the students’ leadership network.
