Enugu State has unveiled the official mascot for the 2026 National Sports Festival, with organisers promising an edition that will raise the bar for sports competitions in Nigeria.
The mascot, named “Odum Eze, Lion King,” was presented during an event at the International Conference Centre in Enugu at the weekend. Governor Peter Mbah, who was represented by his deputy, Ifeanyi Ossai, formally unveiled the symbol ahead of the festival scheduled for November 27 to December 11, 2026.
The choice of a lion, according to the state government, reflects Enugu’s identity and is intended to convey qualities such as courage, strength, leadership and discipline.
Ossai said those values would also define the competition, stressing that the state wants the Coal City Games to be remembered for integrity, high standards and outstanding organisation.
He said Enugu was determined to host a festival that would meet international expectations and exceed the standards set by previous editions.
The governor also used the occasion to call for renewed investment in grassroots sports, particularly school competitions, arguing that Nigeria must strengthen its talent-development system if it is to regain its position among leading sporting nations.
Speaking at the event, the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olapade, expressed confidence in Enugu’s ability to successfully host the festival.
Olapade noted that Enugu would become only the second state in the South-East to stage the National Sports Festival since Imo hosted the competition in 1998.
He said recent inspections of sporting facilities and other infrastructure had given the commission confidence that the state was making substantial progress ahead of the games.
According to him, the security arrangements and infrastructure development in Enugu were particularly encouraging, although some projects, including the swimming pool and indoor sports hall, still needed final work before the festival begins.
Olapade also disclosed that the Federal Government was changing its approach to hosting the National Sports Festival by providing greater support for sports infrastructure in host states instead of leaving the burden entirely to state governments.
He predicted that the 2026 edition would be one of the most significant in the history of the festival, describing it as potentially the largest and best-sponsored National Sports Festival to date.
Enugu State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Lloyd Ekweremadu, said the state was approaching the competition with an ambition to deliver both sporting and organisational records.
He pointed to ongoing work at facilities including the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium and the Games Village in Awgu as evidence of the state's preparations.
Ekweremadu said the administration's broader objective was to establish Enugu as a major sporting destination on the African continent.
The festival has also attracted corporate backing, with Premium Trust Bank, the official sponsor, reaffirming its support for the event and wider sports development in Nigeria.
Representing the bank, its Chief Business Officer for the South-South region, Aniebet Offiong, said the financial institution was pleased to partner with Enugu State and the National Sports Commission in delivering the 2026 games.
The mascot unveiling was attended by several prominent sports officials, including Nigeria Olympic Committee President Habu Ahmed Gumel, Paralympic Committee of Nigeria President Sunday Odebode and Enugu State Secretary to the Government Chidiebere Onyia.
With preparations continuing across the state, organisers are now working toward delivering the Coal City Games as an edition capable of setting new standards for the National Sports Festival.
