The Enugu State Police Command has rescued three people who were abducted and recovered firearms, ammunition and other items during an operation in the Enugu metropolis.
The command’s spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday, August 25, 2026.
According to Ndukwe, operatives attached to the Anti-Cultism Unit of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), working alongside members of the Neighbourhood Watch Group and local residents, rescued the victims on August 18.
The operation followed a pursuit of suspected kidnappers that led police operatives to Hillview Road in Independence Layout, Enugu.
Ndukwe said the suspects abandoned a Lexus RX350 and fled after reaching the area. The victims were subsequently rescued unharmed and taken to safety with the assistance of community members.
Police recovered two locally manufactured firearms, including a Beretta-style pistol loaded with five rounds of 9mm ammunition and a locally made cut-to-size firearm. Other items recovered from the scene included a live cartridge, gloves, a face mask and a mobile phone.
The police spokesperson said efforts were ongoing to identify and apprehend the fleeing suspects. Investigators are also working to recover additional exhibits and determine the full extent of the suspects’ involvement in the crime.
The Commissioner of Police in Enugu, Mamman Giwa, commended the police operatives, Neighbourhood Watch members and residents who assisted in the operation.
Giwa assured residents that the command would continue to strengthen intelligence-led and community-supported operations aimed at tackling kidnapping, armed robbery, vehicle theft and other violent crimes.
He also called on residents to remain alert and provide the police with credible information that could help prevent and combat criminal activities in the state.
