A medical outreach organised by renowned optometrist Dr. Ikenna Ugwu has brought free eye care services to over 300 residents of Amechi Uwani and neighbouring communities in Enugu South Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The outreach featured comprehensive eye examinations, blood pressure screening, eye disease diagnosis, distribution of prescription medications, free eyeglasses, masking contact lenses, and other medical supplies valued at several millions of naira.
Speaking during the programme, Dr. Ugwu, who is based in Agbor, Delta State, said the initiative was organised in honour of his late parents, whose lives were marked by generosity and service to humanity.
He explained that two optometrists were engaged for the exercise to ensure quality service delivery. According to him, many participants were unaware they had eye conditions that could eventually threaten their vision if left untreated.
The eye specialist recalled carrying out similar medical outreaches during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Delta State, where he discovered that delayed hospital visits and poor awareness were major reasons many people developed serious eye complications.
He noted that misconceptions, self-medication, and reliance on harmful traditional practices often prevent people from seeking prompt medical attention, adding that public education remains essential in reducing preventable blindness.
Dr. Ugwu said the success of his community health initiatives during his NYSC programme earned him automatic employment with the Delta State Government, inspiring him to continue extending similar humanitarian services to his home community.
He encouraged Nigerians to prioritise routine medical check-ups, especially eye examinations and blood pressure screening, to detect health challenges before they become severe.
According to him, some beneficiaries admitted they had not checked their eyesight or blood pressure for over six months, while others revealed they often ignored medical advice despite being aware of existing health concerns.
Community leader and businessman Chief Geoffrey Umeanuka commended Dr. Ugwu for the initiative, describing him as a worthy ambassador whose generosity reflects the values of his family.
Umeanuka, who is related to the optometrist through marriage, said the overwhelming turnout at the outreach demonstrated the community’s need for accessible healthcare services and praised the donor for providing treatment at no cost.
Also speaking, Engr. Kenechukwu Ugwu, younger brother of the optometrist, said the family organised the outreach as a lasting tribute to their late parents, whose legacy of compassion and philanthropy continues to inspire their commitment to giving back to society.
