The Independent National Electoral Commission has officially announced Saturday, September 19, 2026, as the date for conducting upcoming legislative by-elections across four states in Nigeria.
The electoral body released the schedule through its official communication channels, detailing that the exercise will cover five vacant legislative positions spread across Gombe, Kano, Bauchi, and Delta states. Voting is scheduled to commence at 8:30 in the morning and close by 2:30 in the afternoon, taking place strictly at designated polling units within the affected constituencies.
According to the official release from the commission, the affected areas include one federal constituency and four state house of assembly constituencies. Specifically, the Gombe, Kwami, and Funakaye Federal Constituency in Gombe State is slated for the federal election.
Meanwhile, the state assembly positions involve the Dawakin Kudu State Constituency in Kano State, the Sakwa and Disina State Constituencies in Bauchi State, and the Udu State Constituency in Delta State. These vacancies emerged due to various reasons, including the passing of lawmakers, resignations to contest other political positions, and defections that triggered constitutional vacancies under electoral guidelines.
The electoral body has urged registered voters within these specific constituencies to prepare to come out and exercise their civic responsibilities peacefully. Security agencies and election stakeholders are expected to collaborate closely to ensure a smooth, transparent, and orderly voting process.
Filling these legislative seats is essential to guarantee that the affected populations retain adequate representation in their respective legislative houses while governance continues uninterrupted.
